Man with brown hair and an angular face

Det. Guidry interview

Monday, March 8, 2021 – 2:30 pm

Shelby County (TN) Sheriff's Detective Tom Guidry contacted the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department with a tip regarding Daniel Collier's vehicle.

Detectives Beckwith and Magee went to Memphis, Tennessee, to meet with him.

Participants

  • Detective P. Beckwith
  • Detective J. Magee
  • Detective Tom Guidry

Detective Beckwith: Good to see you again, Tom.

Detective Guidry: Likewise. How was the trip up?

Detective Beckwith: Not bad. You remember Jo Allyn?

Detective Guidry: Absolutely. Good to see you.

Detective Magee: Hi, Tom. We've been told you have information for us on a vehicle registered to Daniel Collier.

Detective Guidry: This morning, I came across a BOLO you released on Friday. I said to myself that the car sounded damn similar to a car I saw advertised in the newspaper, so I pulled up the paper's website to make sure. And there it was.

Detective Magee: What did the advertisement say?

Detective Guidry: The ad called for the car to be up for a public auction set for this Thursday.

Detective Beckwith: Where was the car prior to the auction?

Detective Guidry: It was at Mace's Towing. I contacted them this morning, and they confirmed the vehicle was there.

Detective Magee: Is that when you called us?

Detective Guidry: Yes. I assume you have a warrant ready for it?

Detective Magee: Sure do.

Detective Guidry: While you were driving up, I made sure that Mace's understood the car was evidence and that you'd be coming for it.

Detective Beckwith: Professional, as always.

Detective Guidry: You know it, Beckwith. I had the car taken out of the auction too. I should dip into your paycheck this week.

Detective Beckwith: Come down to Oxford. I'll buy ya a beer.

Detective Magee: Did Mace's say where they towed it from?

Detective Guidry: Yeah, Memphis airport. It had been there for 30 days.

Detective Magee: Where in the airport?

Detective Guidry: Just in a long-term parking spot. Whoever left it there didn't pay for extended parking, so Mace's came to get it after the 30 days were up.

Detective Beckwith: When was that?

Detective Guidry: February 4th.

Detective Beckwith: Why didn't it go to auction earlier?

Detective Guidry: Tennessee law.

Detective Beckwith: Okay.

Detective Guidry: The car falls under the provision for abandoned vehicles. So, once towed, notice is sent to the car's registered owner, in this case, one Daniel Collier. He had a number of days to respond but didn't, so the car was put up for auction at its earliest date.

Detective Magee: Where was the notice sent?

Detective Guidry: An Alesville, Mississippi address. Let's see … 3 County Road 169.

Detective Magee: Vincent's house.

Detective Guidry: Dad?

Detective Beckwith: Yeah, the guardian.

Detective Magee: Is it possible that Daniel drove himself to the airport and arranged for someone to pick up his car?

Detective Guidry: And that person just didn't pick the car up? Sure, that would explain why the car got towed.

Detective Beckwith: So you're thinking Daniel got on a plane?

Detective Guidry: I could check at the airport to see if he was on any flight rolls or if he checked any bags or something along those lines. What dates am I looking at?

Detective Magee: Well, if the car was at the airport for 30 days, we're looking at the first week in January. I'd say anytime between the 1st and the 7th.

Detective Guidry: And what was his destination?

Detective Magee: New York.

Detective Guidry: All right, I can check on it.

Detective Beckwith: What about the airport's parking area cameras?

Detective Guidry: I got the exact spot the car was parked in from the towing guy at Mace's. We can check with the airport to see if their cameras were set on the car and, if so, what they saw.

Detective Magee: Great. Did you notice any potential evidence on or in the vehicle when you first saw it?

Detective Guidry: When I was down at the tow yard, I didn't see anything that jumped out at me.

Detective Beckwith: I hope we haven't lost evidence, dragging this car all around.

Detective Guidry: If there's evidence on that car, I'm sure y'all will find it.

Detective Magee: Thanks again for being so quick on that BOLO. Looking for that car after it was auctioned off probably would've been a nightmare.

Detective Guidry: Yeah, no problem. I'll email you when I get answers from the airport.

Detective Beckwith: Okay, Magee, let's get that car.
