He did try to defend himself obviously.
You should look for DNA under his nails or for signs of forced entry

No signs of forced entry and no evidence under the nails. House was ransacked though.

I'd be interested in information about the Will and or life insurance. Has he recently gotten a large policy or has he always had one? Does he have one at all? Or multiple?
If so, who's the beneficiary of said policies?
What is the relationship between Grant and Ashley? And are either or both standing to gain a large sum if the old man kicks off?

If he was beating and stabbed, did he get a chance to fire a few rounds off, or was it placed in hand. Seem like both son and wife had time to stage a few things.

The damage to his hands indicate that he was in a struggle with either the assailant, or another individual before he was killed. I would certainly check with local hospital emergency rooms to see if there has been anyone seeking treatment for injuries related to a fist fight. Also, the blood appears to be pooled and not such that may have flowed from the body upon collapse. There could be a person at large with a knife wound indicating that the deceased used the knife in defense from an attacker. Tests should be done to make sure the blood is his and not that of assailants.

The perp had to be living with him or getting something off of his death they took nothing pointing to that conclusion.

"Visual inspection of the hands revealed contusions and possible broken knuckles. Contusions and abrasions were also visible on the face, left and right arms." = The victime fought with anyone. Who? Did he fight with the killer? or anyone else?

"A large sharp force wound was visible in the abdomen area." = He was killed with a knife?
