Victim identification

While waiting for confirmation of the victim's identity, R/Is compiled information on Wendy Pane Holloway and her history. A standard criminal background check found no record of arrests or criminal activity.

Late that afternoon, R/Is received the coroner's preliminary report including a positive identification via dental records of Wendy Pane Holloway as the Kelly Woods Jane Doe.

Investigative action:

R/Is located a phone number for an Elizabeth Pane at the return address on the envelope found with the birthday card in the victim's residence. Detective Armstrong contacted Elizabeth Pane, verified she was Wendy Pane Holloway's mother, and made the death notification by telephone.

Kelly Woods scene evidence – tire tracks

The Crime Lab provided R/Is with copies of the tire track casts and pictures taken at the scene in Kelly Woods.

A preliminary comparison at the scene of the tire tracks and the tires on the vehicle driven by Michael Robbins indicated they were not consistent.

Investigative action:

The Crime Lab will continue their analysis to try to identify the brand, size and other details of the tires that made the tracks at the Kelly Green scene and provide a list of vehicle makes and models likely to have such tires.

Search – Victim's residence

At 10:00 a.m., R/Is obtained a search warrant for a more thorough search of Wendy Pane Holloway's residence and grounds at 728 Shady Oaks Circle. R/Is then began a search of that location and took several items into evidence for further investigation.

In the office/study of the residence, R/Is observed a number of books covering topics including anger management, sibling relationships, romantic relationships, fertility, self-help, business strategizing, law, cryptography, network security, computer programming, international travel, and assorted fiction.

R/Is noted that, while various computer peripherals and cell phone accessories were found, the victim's computer and cell phone could not be located.

In the master bedroom, R/Is observed a framed 8"x10" portrait photograph signed "Always, Blake" on the bedside table. In the drawer of that table was a 12-count box of latex condoms with five condoms remaining.

Investigative action:

R/Is contacted investigators at the station and asked them to start a check to identify the victim's cell phone service provider and internet service provider.

Call from coroner's office

The coroner's office reported that preliminary laboratory analysis of the victim's gastric contents showed 6-9 grams of material identified as pasta and salad lettuce. Alcoholic fluids, identified as wine, were cojoined with the food substances. The items were likely consumed three hours before death.

Investigative action:

Given that a receipt from Old Venice Pizza, which serves the type of food found in the gastric contents, was found in the victim's wallet, R/Is will follow up with that establishment to confirm the victim's presence there on April 15, 2022, and gather information about her activities and companions, if any, while there.

Search – Victim's residence

R/Is continued their search of Wendy Pane Holloway's residence and grounds at 728 Shady Oaks Circle in cooperation with CSU.

Outside the residence, items found in the shed and in the yard outside the shed seem to indicate the victim may have been attacked in that area.

Inside the shed, a number of pieces of folk art were stored including paintings, woodcrafts, and other items in addition to paint and other art supplies. R/Is further observed that the floor, walls, and ceiling had a variety of stains and spatters but were unable to determine visually whether they were blood, paint, wood stain, or another substance.

Investigative action:

R/Is directed CSU to collect samples and other evidence from the shed and other areas of the property for analysis.

Call from coroner's office

The coroner's office notified R/Is that the victim's body had been released to the family and was being transported to Pittsburgh, PA for burial.

Investigative action:

Detective Armstrong made arrangements to travel to Pittsburgh.

Interview – Willie King

Detective Murphy spoke with Willie King following his return to Oxford from New Orleans. Despite his misdemeanor criminal history, Mr. King arrived at the interview without an attorney. However, he balked when asked for DNA, insisting his relationship with the victim was not sexual and saying he wanted to consult his attorney.

Investigative action:

R/Is will follow up with King at a later date regarding his DNA sample.

Victim background

Detective Armstrong drove to Memphis and flew to Pittsburgh to attend the funeral and to interview the victim's mother and other family and friends.

Upon arrival at his hotel in Pittsburgh, Detective Armstrong contacted Elizabeth Pane and arranged to interview her at the chapel where the services would be held the next day.

Detective Armstrong also attempted to interview Peter Pane, the victim's brother, but Mr. Pane was too emotional to provide useful information.

Investigative action:

Detective Armstrong learned that Peter Pane was staying at a local hotel, where he would try to catch up with Mr. Pane the next day.

Interviews - Proud Larry's employees

Detective Murphy and Deputy Watson interviewed employees who were working the night of April 15, 2022, when the victim is believed to have been at that establishment. Several people remembered her when shown a photograph and said she was there that night.

A few witnesses reported seeing a confrontation between the victim and another woman they identified as Willie King's girlfriend, Carmen Rodriguez. The victim reportedly walked away from this confrontation unharmed. No one reported seeing any further contact between the victim and Ms. Rodriguez.

A doorman reported seeing the victim driving a car matching the description of the vehicle found parked in the carport at her residence.

Investigative action:

Detective Murphy and Deputy Watson arranged to continue their inquiries the next day.

Interviews – victim's family and friends

In Pittsburgh, Detective Armstrong attended the victim's funeral and made contact with several witnesses. Detective Armstrong attempted to speak with the victim's former roommate, Jenny Sadlier, without success.

Detective Armstrong also made a second attempt to interview Peter Pane, again without success.

Investigative action:

Further attempts will be made to interview Ms. Sadlier and Mr. Pane.

Interviews - Proud Larry's employees

Detective Murphy and Deputy Watson continued their interviews of employees who were working the night of April 15, 2022, when the victim is believed to have been at that establishment.

A few witnesses reported seeing a confrontation between the victim and a young man described as in his 20s with dark hair and eyeglasses. The victim reportedly walked away from this confrontation unharmed. No one reported seeing any further contact between the victim and the young man.

Investigative action:

Further investigation will be conducted to verify the identities of the two parties who clashed with the victim that night.

Tracking the victim's activities

ATM security video showing the victim making a withdrawal the night she died

Detective Murphy investigated the victim's movements on the night of April 15, 2022. A charge in the amount of $21.98 was made on the victim's Visa card at Old Venice Pizza Company (1112-1/2 Van Buren Ave.) at 9:24 p.m., which corresponds with a receipt found in the victim's wallet.

At 9:50 p.m. that same night, an ATM security camera recorded the victim making a withdrawal at the Regions Bank ATM near Square Books at 9:50 p.m. Bank records indicate the withdrawal amount was $100.00, which corresponds with a receipt found in the victim's wallet.

Based on the interviews conducted at Proud Larry's, it appears the victim proceeded to that location after making the withdrawal.

Investigative action:

Management at Old Venice Pizza is checking their records to determine what the victim ordered that night. When that information becomes available, R/Is will confirm whether it's consistent with the victim's gastric contents at the time of her death.

Interviews – victim's family and friends

In Pittsburgh, Detective Armstrong went by Peter Pane's hotel to talk to him and was told he had checked out the night before.

Detective Armstrong then met with Anil Virani, who had given the eulogy at the victim's funeral. When asked, Mr. Virani said he hadn't spoken much to Peter Pane over the last few days but said he wasn't surprised because he and Mr. Pane had never been close. He was also unsurprised to learn Mr. Pane had checked out of his hotel. Mr. Virani said he didn't know whether Mr. Pane had gone to his mother's home or back to Memphis but speculated it was the latter.

Investigative action:

Detective Armstrong will make another attempt to interview Peter Pane when he passes through Memphis on his return home.
