False leads stifle Frederick Miller investigation

Leads generated by $2,500 reward only dead ends so far, YCSD says

Last week, the community watchdog organization Concerned Oxford Parents (COP) offered a reward for information in the murder of local high school teacher Frederick Miller.

According to the sheriff's department, dozens of people have responded, but while a few leads seemed promising initially, none of the tips to date have yielded any substantial evidence.

"We are still hopeful that some member of the public may have information that will help us bring this case to a resolution," said YCSD Public Information Officer Elizabeth Jones.

COP President Ben Morgan said the group stands behind their decision to offer the reward.

"The brutal murder of Frederick Miller cannot be allowed to go unanswered," Morgan said. "Oxford is not the kind of community that turns a blind eye to violence and death, especially when it involves an upstanding citizen like Frederick."

Miller was shot with an arrow on October 29 in the Faith and Glory Community Church parking lot as he was leaving choir practice.

One of Miller's students, Marc Huddleston, was briefly held last week in connection with Miller's death, but he was released without charge on Friday. The next day, COP announced the reward.

Morgan rejects criticism that processing the tips generated by COP's reward is straining the resources of an already overworked sheriff's department.

"COP is providing invaluable assistance to the sheriff's department and the members of this community by encouraging people to come forward with what they know and solve this heinous crime," Morgan said. "We're confident the YCSD can handle it."
