New evidence leads to student's release

Latest information raises questions about Nelson's possible involvement in Waterson's death

University of Mississippi student Hunter Nelson, 21, was released by the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department today after new evidence surfaced that cast doubt on his alleged involvement in the murder of Kristi Waterson.

Nelson had been held in the Yoknapatawpha County Detention Center since his arrest on Saturday morning.

The sheriff's department declined to specify the evidence that led to Nelson's release.

However, the department's Public Information Officer, Elizabeth Jones, said, "Hunter Nelson has been released from custody. We appreciate his cooperation in our investigation, and we stand resolved to do everything possible to bring the killer to justice."

Jones would not comment on allegations that Nelson has filed a lawsuit accusing the sheriff's department of botching the investigation and holding him without just cause.

On August 27, University of Mississippi business instructor Kristi Waterson was found dead in her Oxford apartment. In the wake of her death, rumor and innuendo swirled on campus as students and faculty alike discussed alleged improper relationships Waterson maintained with her students.

Waterson's parents, Michael and Virginia Waterson of Biloxi, have offered a $75,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of her killer.

If you have any information about the death of Kristi Waterson, please contact the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department or Yoknapatawpha Crime Stoppers.
