Theres a danish saying (surely theres one similar in other languages) that "You learn the truth from children and drunk people." - with that said, he might have thought it to have been a root at first when he picked it up, maybe he had even been drinking before he went to Duffy's. I'm thinking he must've found it buried somewhere on his ground, and then wanting to have some fun in a local setting, joking that it was the hand of his ex. Wether it belonged to a man of a woman, I find it hard to tell from the state of it just by looks...

If Reagle explained the item as a "root," not only is he intoxicated, he can't see well, either. We need to know where his farm is and exactly where he "found on his farm."

Is he insane?...I don't think so anyone's that uses clues and don't talk straight have an underlining meaning which makes them seem mad I'll continue reading before I can have more of an opinion ...!
