INVESTIGATION CASE FILE NOTE

Key Identification

On October 18, 2023, in a search of the Hoyt Biffle murder scene (the control shed of Biffle's business Under Glass), investigators found a ring of four keys (005299-22) next to a money clip (005299-23) on a countertop near Biffle's dead body. These keys were sent to the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory in Jackson for a forensic examination on October 19.

After the completion of the forensic examination of the keys, Detectives Beckwith and Magee requested the transmittal of the keys to the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department to determine what locks they opened. The keys arrived at YCSD on October 25.

By manually trying the keys in locked property owned by Hoyt Biffle on October 26, Detectives Beckwith and Magee were able to identify three of the keys as follows:

• 005299-22-01 – Key to Biffle residence
• 005299-22-02 – Key to Under Glass control shed
• 005299-22-03 – Key to Hoyt Biffle's Ford F-150 pickup truck

Using information found in a file (005299-62) at Biffle's residence, the above-named detectives verified that Hoyt Biffle rented a climate-controlled storage unit at Locked Away Storage on MS-30 East. A visit to that location confirmed that the remaining key (005299-22-04) unlocked a padlock on that unit. The door of the unit was not opened, and the contents of the unit were not examined, pending a search warrant.

Investigative Action

Obtain a search warrant for Hoyt Biffle's storage unit.

Investigation of YCSD Case # 005299-18J-2023 is active and ongoing as of this date.
