Reporting Officer's narrative

REPORTING OFFICER'S NARRATIVE(Brief narrative of the facts surrounding the offense and the arrest.)

At 11:38 p.m., Dispatch received a 911 call reporting the discovery of a dead body at 59 Snow Mass Cove. The caller identified himself as Scott Bryant (Person 2), the deceased's live-in boyfriend.

Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Unit 209 (Officer P. Winston) was dispatched and arrived at the scene at 11:43 p.m. After confirming the presence of the body, R/O secured the scene and contacted Dispatch to request backup and medical assistance.

Reporting Investigators (R/Is) Detectives M. Ragland and T. Armstrong were assigned and proceeded directly to the scene. At R/Is' request, Coroner's Inspector L. Johnson and a CSU team were notified to respond to the scene.

R/Is arrived at the scene at 11:54 p.m. and found that R/O had secured the area. Environmental conditions at the scene upon arrival are as follows: Weather: Cloudy; Exterior Ambient Temperature: 75° F/ 24° C; Relative Humidity: 90%; Interior Ambient Temperature 72° F / 22° C; Interior Relative Humidity: 49%.

R/O Winston made the following verbal report, which is stated in summary and not verbatim.

On arrival, R/O was met at the front door of the residence by an adult male who identified himself as Scott Bryant (Person 2). Bryant led R/O into the master bedroom of the residence, where R/O observed the body of an apparently deceased adult female, identified by Bryant as Virginia Dole (Person 1).

R/O then secured the scene, called for backup and medical assistance, and escorted Bryant to the living room of the residence.

R/O said Bryant told him that he came home from work and discovered the body. Bryant said he gently shook her shoulders, then knelt next to the bed and stroked her hair. Bryant said he telephoned 911 from his cell phone while kneeling next to the bed and was advised by the 911 operator to proceed to the front door to meet R/O. Bryant said he did not disturb anything else in the room.

R/O said YCFD EMTs R. Peterson and J. Bilkey arrived at approximately 11:45 p.m., and after confirming the person was deceased, withdrew from the area.

R/O said Officers A.L. Quinlan (Unit #202) and Richard Squire (Unit #225) arrived at his location at 7:07 p.m. While R/O secured the scene around the body, Officers Quinlan and Squire gathered all other persons present at the east end of the warehouse for additional information gathering.

R/O Winston further stated that, to the best of his knowledge, the following personnel had occasion to enter the area and must be documented by CSU personnel: witness Scott Bryant, EMTs Peterson and Bilkey, and himself.

After receiving the report from R/O Watson, R/Is conducted a preliminary inspection of the scene. R/Is noted no signs of disturbance or forced entry into the residence.

Upon entering the main bedroom, R/Is observed a lifeless human body, a female estimated to be in her late 30s to early 40s, on the west side of the bed located against the north wall of the bedroom. The body was lying supine on top of the bedclothes. The head was resting on one bed pillow to the north, and the feet were to the south. The face was turned to the east.

Visual inspection indicated the deceased was wearing a light blue, full-length, satin nightgown and matching peignoir. The right-side bottom of the peignoir was hanging over the west side of the bed. The legs were extended and crossed at the ankles, with the left foot on top. The left arm was extended alongside the torso. The right arm was slightly bent and lying across the torso with the right hand resting on the stomach, approximately two inches above the left hip.

Further inspection indicated that the deceased was wearing full makeup, including lipstick or lip gloss. The hair was styled. The fingernails and toenails were manicured in a light blue polish that matched the color of the nightclothes. The makeup appeared to be undisturbed, and the hair appeared to be slightly mussed.

There were no visible indications of external injury to the deceased. R/Is delayed further inspection of the body until the arrival of the Coroner's Inspector.

On a nightstand located to the left (west) of the bed, R/I's observed the following items:

  • An open prescription pill container for Hydrocodone 5 mg-acetaminophen 325 mg tablets
    • Prescribed to Scott Bryant, 1 to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain, max 8 tablets/24 hours
    • Prescription for 30 tablets, no tablets remaining
    • Filled 08/03/2020
  • The lid to the pill container
  • A light blue 32-ounce insulated tumbler with a light blue straw, containing approximately 3-inches of clear, odorless liquid
  • A lighted table lamp

Located on the bed pillow on the east side of the bed, R/Is observed a plain, pale blue envelope and six intact petals of what appeared to be a dried red rose. Handwritten on the outside of the envelope were the words, "He loves me not." The envelope contained a plain, pale blue piece of paper on which appeared to be a handwritten suicide note.

R/Is noted that there were no signs of a struggle or other disturbance in the master bedroom. The television was off. The overhead light and the other lamps were off.

No other items were immediately visible in the vicinity. CSU will conduct a thorough examination and inventory and report their findings.

Coroner's Inspector Luwinda Johnson arrived at the scene at approximately 12:15 a.m. and joined R/Is at the body's location. Inspector Johnson pronounced the victim deceased at 12:22 a.m. by visual observation that the victim was not breathing and by tactile observation that the victim did not have a palpable carotid pulse or any other indications of heartbeat or respiration.

Inspector Johnson visually examined the anterior and posterior of the body and observed no apparent wounds.

Inspector Johnson noted that rigor mortis was evident in the face and arms and early indications of non-fixed livor mortis were observable on the posterior of the body and the right side of the face. While she withheld an official estimate pending an autopsy, Inspector Johnson speculated the victim had been dead approximately 2 to 4 hours. Inspector Johnson indicated that further details would be available in the official autopsy report.

After Inspector Johnson completed her initial inspection of the body, she stayed with the CSU team to ensure the integrity of the body while the team took photographs of the scene and performed preliminary analyses until the body could be removed from the scene without affecting other evidence.

CSU arrived at the scene at approximately 12:31 a.m. R/Is instructed CSU to process the entire scene according to standard procedure.

The body of the deceased was remanded into the custody of Coroner's Inspector Luwinda Johnson and was removed from the scene at 1:14 a.m. and transported to the coroner's office for autopsy.

R/Is left the scene at 1:23 a.m. to interview Scott Bryant, who had been transported to the Sheriff's Department.

Before leaving, R/I Armstrong instructed CSU to seal the scene upon completion or end-of-day suspension of processing. CSU to notify R/Is of progress by the end of this date. As of this filing, CSU is still actively processing at the scene.

Evidence was remanded into the custody of Forensics Officer T. R. Douglas for transport to the State Crime Lab for routine analysis. CSU is expected to submit an inventory of items taken into evidence within fourteen days of this report, with detailed report(s) of their findings to follow at a later date.
