Artist's Statement:

Almost all of my work begins with salvage. Trees downed by storms or culled from local forests provide me with a wealth of raw material. Whenever possible, I use salvaged wood for my turnings; the roadside is my lumber yard. It gives me great pleasure to know that, when trees fall, at least some of them will become something other than firewood or landfill.

Wood is a reluctant medium, always ready to split, warp, twist and thwart my design. Form and function must always take into account that wood is a living thing, with a will of its own.

Woodturning is a marriage of wood and steel. A process of speed, keen edges, and hand-guided tools to remove everything that is not needed. I impose the shape. I decide how thick or thin and push the risk of failure. I provide the sleight-of-hand, but it is the wood that is the magic.

While on the lathe, a piece in progress belongs to me. Once finished, my turnings belong to the viewer to enjoy as form, color, texture, and the pattern unique to each piece of wood. They are to be held, weighed in the hands to verify what light and shadow tell the eyes… or to surprise with something unexpected.
