Kade Johnson interview

Sunday, February 4, 2024 – 11:45 p.m.

Kade Johnson was one of the people at the party the night Blake died.

Detectives Armstrong and Murphy interviewed her at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department.

Participants:

  • Detective T. Armstrong
  • Detective S. Murphy
  • Kade Johnson

Detective Murphy: Please state your name and address for the record.

Kade Johnson: Kade Marie Johnson, 358 Choctaw Drive, Oxford.

Detective Armstrong: Tell us what happened tonight.

Kade Johnson: I'll tell you what I can remember, but it's all a blur. Blake was there one minute and dead the next. I can't believe it. I'm going to miss him so much.

Detective Murphy: We're sorry for the loss of your friend, Kade. I know this is difficult, but we need to continue if you can.

Kade Johnson: I'm okay. What do you need to know?

Detective Armstrong: What time did you get to Blake's house tonight?

Kade Johnson: Around 6:45 p.m.

Detective Armstrong: What did you do first?

Kade Johnson: I talked to Blake for a few minutes about our next rehearsal. I play guitar in the band Random Deeds. He was waiting for that guy Stix to show up.

Detective Armstrong: What can you tell us about Stix?

Kade Johnson: Not much. He was challenging Blake at Guitar Hero. Blake has a rep as the best player around.

Detective Murphy: Did you talk to Stix?

Kade Johnson: I met him at the door, let him in, and took him to the game room to meet Blake. He got in Blake's face and told him he was ready to rock him into oblivion.

Detective Armstrong: Did you know Stix before tonight?

Kade Johnson: No, it was the first time I'd met him. I know he plays in a local band called Simple Conquest.

Detective Armstrong: What was your first impression of Stix?

Kade Johnson: I thought he was cocky. Blake was playing a video game and asked him to wait a few minutes. I think it ticked Stix off, but he waited anyway. He really wanted to start playing against Blake.

Detective Armstrong: What did Stix do while he was waiting for Blake?

Kade Johnson: He came over and talked to me about our band.

Detective Armstrong: Was talking all he did?

Kade Johnson: What do you mean?

Detective Armstrong: According to Stix, he had your phone number, and you two were kissing within ten minutes of his arrival.

Kade Johnson: What a line of BS! I admit I was attracted to him at first, but the cocky little loser had an attitude. He said I should go out drinking with him afterward to celebrate his victory. I sent him packing, and he took off with his tail between his legs.

Detective Murphy: Where did he go?

Kade Johnson: I guess he went outside for a cigarette. The next time I saw him, he reeked of smoke and whiskey.

Detective Armstrong: What happened next?

Kade Johnson: The pizza guy, Jamey, delivered our food, and everyone was scrambling for money.

Detective Armstrong: Where was Stix at this time?

Kade Johnson: I don't know. I went to get money for my food.

Detective Murphy: Where were you when the lights went out?

Kade Johnson: I was in the game room watching Blake sing to Bree Paxon. All of a sudden, it got dark, and when the lights came back on, Blake was lying on the floor. Kent ran over and said Blake was dead. He called 911.

Detective Murphy: Did you notice anyone or anything unusual before the lights went out?

Kade Johnson: Jamey was giving Blake dirty looks before he left.

Detective Murphy: Why?

Kade Johnson: He was jealous of Blake. Jamey's girlfriend, Bree, was always flirting with Blake, and it drove Jamey crazy.

Detective Armstrong: Do you think Jamey was jealous enough to want to hurt Blake?

Kade Johnson: I don't know. I just don't know. You think someone I know purposely killed Blake?

Detective Armstrong: We're just asking questions. We don't know what happened yet.

Kade Johnson: What are you saying? Are you saying Blake was murdered? What are you talking about?

Detective Murphy: We're not saying anything right now. Just take a breath, Kade.

Kade Johnson: I'm sorry. I just— This is just— I can't—

Detective Murphy: It's okay. Here's a tissue. Why don't we take a break now? We'll need to talk to you again later, but you can go for now.
