Serious-looking young woman with long dark hair

Bree Paxton interview

Sunday, February 4, 2024 – 10:10 p.m.

Bree Paxton was a friend of Blake Jenson and was at his party the night he died.

Detectives Murphy and Armstrong interviewed her at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department.

Participants:

  • Detective T. Armstrong
  • Detective S. Murphy
  • Bree Paxton

Detective Murphy: Please state your name and address.

Bree Paxton: Bree Paxton, I live at 239 Colonial Road.

Detective Murphy: We need to go over what happened tonight at Blake Jenson's guesthouse. We'll also be asking you some personal questions about his life and yours.

Bree Paxton: Okay. No problem. I'll tell you what I know.

Detective Murphy: Bree, I can see you're still pretty upset. Are you able to answer our questions?

Bree Paxton: Yes, I'm sorry. It's just that he was such a special person. He was so sweet. I just can't believe I'll never hear his laugh again, never see him smile.

Detective Armstrong: Were you and Blake close?

Bree Paxton: Well, no, not really. I hung out at his house a lot, but Madison was always there. We were friends, all three of us.

Detective Murphy: Did Madison and Blake have a good relationship?

Bree Paxton: It was all right. He could have done better.

Detective Armstrong: Do you think you would have met the standard?

Bree Paxton: Don't get me wrong, Maddy's a good person, but I don't think she cares about him like he deserves. She flirts with other guys right under his nose. Yes, I would've appreciated him much more. He deserved that.

Detective Murphy: Don't you have a boyfriend of your own, Bree?

Bree Paxton: Uh-huh, Jamey, but he's not much fun. He is so jealous. He thought I had a thing going with Blake. I didn't.

Detective Murphy: But you wanted to, didn't you?

Bree Paxton: I would have dropped Jamey so fast if Blake ever even hinted that he was into me, but he didn't.

Detective Murphy: Do you think Jamey would've hurt Blake?

Bree Paxton: No! He was pretty upset tonight, but not with Blake. He was mad at me.

Detective Murphy: Do you know of anyone who would want Blake dead?

Bree Paxton: Dead? Not really. There was a guy there—they called him Stix. He certainly didn't like Blake, but I couldn't say he hated him or anything. He seemed like a bully. He smelled like cigarettes, he was dirty, and he was bragging about how he was going to "put Blake down."

Detective Armstrong: "Put Blake down?" That sounds pretty serious to me.

Bree Paxton: I think it was a reference to that stupid game, Guitar Hero. Those guys were so serious about that game.

Detective Armstrong: Serious enough to kill?

Bree Paxton: God, I hope not. I don't know. I can't see inside their heads.

Detective Armstrong: Was Stix in the room when the lights went out?

Bree Paxton: Yes, I think so.

Detective Armstrong: Do you think Blake knew how you felt about him?

Bree Paxton: I don't know.

Detective Armstrong: Did you ever say anything to him about how you felt? Write him letters or email? Maybe give him little things?

Bree Paxton: I made some breadsticks for him. Blake was lactose intolerant, so I looked up a recipe for lactose-free bread and made him some. Is that what you mean?

Detective Armstrong: Is anybody else in the group lactose intolerant?

Bree Paxton: I don't think so.

Detective Armstrong: So if you put something in the breadsticks, you could assume that only Blake would eat them.

Bree Paxton: I would never hurt Blake. I don't want to talk to you anymore. Please, this is just too much. I need to leave.

Detective Murphy: We're just trying to find who killed your friend. Don't you want that?

Bree Paxton: Yes, I do. I really don't have anything else to tell you, though. Please, can I go now?

Detective Murphy: Maybe you should, but we'll probably need to talk to you again.

Bree Paxton: Okay. Goodbye.
