Yvonne Boyd interview #2

Wednesday, June 15, 2022 – 4:04 p.m.

Yvonne Boyd is the Events Manager at the Yoknapatawpha County Convention Center (YCCC), where Douglas Reed was attending the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference. His body was found in one of its meeting rooms.

Detectives Murphy and Parker re-interviewed Mrs. Boyd at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department.

Participants:

  • Detective S. Murphy
  • Detective E. Parker
  • Yvonne Boyd

Detective Murphy: Hello, Mrs. Boyd.

Yvonne Boyd: Hello, detective.

Detective Murphy: Would you please state your name and address for the record?

Yvonne Boyd: Yvonne Boyd, 1509 Smallwood Drive.

Detective Parker: Mrs. Boyd, what were you doing at YCCC on the evening of June 12th?

Yvonne Boyd: I was preparing for the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference.

Detective Parker: What exactly were you doing?

Yvonne Boyd: I was making sure that all of the last-minute items were taken care of.

Detective Murphy: Can you give some examples of specific tasks?

Yvonne Boyd: I don't have my Faulkner conference checklist with me, but I would have confirmed the number of attendees for the breakfast, and I would have ensured there were ample servers and staff on the schedule and that there were sufficient amounts of coffee, juice, condiments, pastries— this could take a while, detective.

Detective Parker: I'm okay with that.

Yvonne Boyd: If you could tell me what it is you want to know, I'd be happy to give you an answer.

Detective Murphy: How late were you at the conference center on the night of June 12th?

Yvonne Boyd: I was there until about 9:00 p.m.

Detective Murphy: During the time you were making your last-minute preparations that evening, did you see Douglas Reed at the conference center?

Yvonne Boyd: Yes.

Detective Parker: Did you spend any time with Doug Reed that night?

Yvonne Boyd: No.

Detective Murphy: Did you speak with him?

Yvonne Boyd: I— I really don't remember.

Detective Parker: How did you happen to run into him?

Yvonne Boyd: I— I just saw him, that's all.

Detective Parker: Mrs. Boyd, I'm beginning to distrust you. Some of your answers aren't so truthful.

Yvonne Boyd: What are you trying to say?

Detective Murphy: It's imperative that you be completely honest with us.

Yvonne Boyd: It's complicated. I'm afraid I'll lose my job.

Detective Parker: Well, I hear there are lots of nice jobs to keep a person occupied while serving time in prison.

Yvonne Boyd: I didn't kill Doug! I have no reason to want him dead.

Detective Murphy: Mrs. Boyd, were you involved in a sexual relationship with Doug Reed?

Yvonne Boyd: I— I—

Detective Murphy: Now is the time, Mrs. Boyd.

Yvonne Boyd: Fine. Yes.

Detective Parker: Did you speak with Doug Reed the night of June 12th at the conference center?

Yvonne Boyd: Yes.

Detective Murphy: What did you discuss?

Yvonne Boyd: We made a date for later that night.

Detective Parker: Do you know what he was doing at YCCC?

Yvonne Boyd: Not specifically. It had something to do with the next day's presentation.

Detective Murphy: Are you familiar with Julio Bigham?

Yvonne Boyd: Yes. He's on my housekeeping staff.

Detective Parker: Is he a good employee?

Yvonne Boyd: Very good, yes. I usually schedule him the night before an important event because he is very thorough.

Detective Parker: Is he dependable?

Yvonne Boyd: Yes. He always makes sure the rooms are clean and secured.

Detective Murphy: Are you confident that he followed protocol and secured the rooms on the evening of the 12th?

Yvonne Boyd: Yes. I know he did because I checked the ones that had computer equipment in them.

Detective Murphy: Mrs. Boyd, how did Doug Reed get into Meeting Room 10?

Yvonne Boyd: I let him in.

Detective Murphy: Did you go in the room with him?

Yvonne Boyd: No. I unlocked the door for him. We kissed. He said he'd try to get away from the Rowan Oak dinner later—make an excuse to Nora—and that he'd call me if he was able to meet me.

Detective Murphy: And?

Yvonne Boyd: He never called.

Detective Parker: What time was it when you let him into Meeting Room 10?

Yvonne Boyd: Around 8:30, 8:45 p.m.?

Detective Parker: Why did he want to get into that room?

Yvonne Boyd: He didn't say.

Detective Parker: Was he scheduled to present or participate in a panel in that room?

Yvonne Boyd: I don't think so.

Detective Parker: So why did he say he needed to get in there?

Yvonne Boyd: He didn't tell me. All he said was he needed to get in, so I let him in.

Detective Parker: You just let him in, no questions asked?

Yvonne Boyd: Well … yes.

Detective Murphy: Did you see anyone else near the meeting rooms that evening?

Yvonne Boyd: No.

Detective Murphy: You're sure? You didn't see anyone? Not an employee? Not a guest? Not anyone connected with the conference?

Yvonne Boyd: No, no one.

Detective Murphy: Where did you go once you left YCCC?

Yvonne Boyd: I went home and waited for Doug to call. I fell asleep around 11:00 p.m.

Detective Parker: I don't suppose anyone can vouch for you?

Yvonne Boyd: Not that I'm aware of.

Detective Murphy: On the morning of the 13th, how did you discover the body?

Yvonne Boyd: I didn't. Jake Hemphill found Doug, came out of the meeting room and told me. I didn't believe him at first.

Detective Parker: What is your relationship with Jake Hemphill?

Yvonne Boyd: Purely professional, detective. Honestly.

Detective Murphy: Thank you for your cooperation, Mrs. Boyd. If we have any further questions, we'll be in touch.
