I think they have finger printed Ed to match to the finger prints on the back exit. Like Bill Rogers said:- Only 2 rooms past me to visit unless someone plans to go through the emergency exit, which happens. And sometimes it's not visitors, either.
So it is obvious that visitors go out through the emergency exit. We also know that there isn't many visitors on a daily basis.
Without going through all the interviews I think Maggie was in the north wing and Ed was questioned about why he did not sign out on the 6th March. On the diagram there is an exit onto Notting Hill Road. So I assume he must have parked there, at least sometimes. By the visitors book the Detectives would be aware who signed in and how many times somebody signed in but didn't sign out.
That exit onto Notting Hill Road has to be an emergency exit. From the line of questioning in Ed's 2nd interview it appears that he must have parked out there and would leave sometimes through the exit.
Lillie Cain the receptionist told the Detectives that she believed that the alarm was either turned off or people knew how to turn it off.
