Dr. Lowry is a popular, if controversial, history professor at Ole Miss

Dr. Charles Lowry was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on June 8, 1958. He spent his childhood growing up in southern Tennessee, near Shiloh battlefield, a crucial site in the Civil War.

His interest in the battlefield and the war led him to study history at Vanderbilt University.

After graduating college, he took a job as a research assistant under Shelby Foote, the pre-eminent Civil War scholar and novelist.

In 1980, Lowry attended the University of North Carolina, where he earned his master's and PhD in Civil War history.

He taught at the University of Southern Mississippi for several years after earning his advanced degrees. He was employed by the University of Mississippi in 1992.

Dr. Lowry's Civil War 101 and 102 classes are favorites among history majors as is his experimental class Reconstructing the Confederacy, which challenges students to redesign military and political maneuvers that failed in the actual Civil War.

Dr. Lowry has dedicated his teaching and research to finding a link between the Civil War America and the present day America. He has spoken at various universities throughout the U.S. and Europe, and he is currently in post-production on a film documentary on Civil War lineage in today's South.

In addition to the numerous articles and lectures, Lowry has published several books, including Civil War 2000, Rethinking Shiloh, Fugitive's Peace: Deserters in the Major American Wars, and the intellectual cult favorite Reconstruction: In the Event That the South Rises Again, a book posing the question, what if the South won the Civil War.

He is currently at work on a book about Confederate General Nathaniel Wallace Shegog, a controversial war figure about whom little has been recorded.
