Looking at this map it doesn't seem like the Ole Miss Motel is very far from the Fontaine residence. Certainly not a 45 minutes drive. Did Ashley go somewhere to meet up with Grant, after all, they knew that they had to go back to the house where they knew there was a dead body. They knew there was some work to do like ransacking the house to make it look like a robbery gone wrong. It's possible Grant and Ashley would go through Philip's brief case while he was asleep. I have no doubt they knew the WILL was being changed and I believe that would have been enough to make that money hungry pair what to kill Philip.
