Arrest report

At 7:55 a.m., Reporting Investigators (R/Is) Detectives S. Murphy and E. Parker arrived at the Kroger at 2013 University Avenue to arrest Emmett Sanford for the March 31, 2024, murder of Wendell Martinson.

R/Is entered the store and located the defendant at the Express Lane check stand. The defendant fled, and a brief foot pursuit ensued. R/Is apprehended the defendant at the entrance/exit doors. R/Is placed the defendant under arrest. The defendant was handcuffed and advised of his rights. Transportation to the Sheriff’s Department proceeded without further incident.

At 8:27 a.m., R/Is turned the defendant over to Sheriff’s Department personnel for processing. At all times while in custody, the defendant appeared lucid and coherent. During transport, the defendant was cooperative and seemed to comprehend what was happening to him.

The defendant said he understood his rights, and then twice said, "I wasn’t running. I wasn’t running." The defendant declined to make any further statement. Once the defendant was handcuffed, he cooperated physically and no longer resisted in any way.
