Smiling woman with short dark hair

On January 19, 1991, Sylvia Renata Powell came into this world weighing only 4 lbs., 6 oz. Sylvia's mother, Renata Powell, unexpectedly went into labor, and Sylvia arrived two months early. Despite her premature arrival, Sylvia was a healthy baby.

After a few days in the hospital, Renata went home, but Sylvia had to remain there until her weight reached 5 pounds. Renata and Sylvia's father, John, visited every day, and they were ecstatic when they were finally allowed to bring their daughter home.

When Renata and John brought Sylvia home from the hospital, their two other children—Zach, age 6, and Ellie, age 4—were thrilled to have a new baby sister. They were amazed at how small she was and watched over her and protected her.

Sylvia and her family lived in a middle-class neighborhood in Oxford, Mississippi. She enjoyed her childhood and had lots of friends and a loving family. She liked going to school and excelled in her studies.

In her freshman year of high school, her paternal grandparents were killed in a small plane crash. Sylvia was heartbroken by their unexpected demise, and she missed them greatly.

The next year, she and her friends joined the "Adopt a Grandparent" program and started visiting residents at the area nursing homes. Sylvia enjoyed talking with the elderly patients. Everyone said that even then, she had the golden touch when it came to soothing their fears and raising their spirits.

That's when Sylvia decided she wanted to become a nurse, and she knew exactly where she wanted to work.

Sylvia worked hard to keep up her grade point average so she could attend nursing school. She graduated from high school in 2009 and enrolled in Northwest Community College for two years. Then she transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.

After graduation, she set out to find a job at an Oxford elder care facility and was hired at the Yoknapatawpha Acres nursing home. Sylvia moved into a small apartment near her work.

She works hard and loves being a nurse and taking care of people that can't take care of themselves. She keeps close ties with her family and sees them as often as she can.

Sylvia is single and dates occasionally, usually men she meets through work. Scuttlebutt around Yoknapatawpha Acres has it that Sylvia was seeing Jerry Shaw for the last few months but that the relationship recently ended and not happily for Sylvia.
