Case Description: Andrew Fine Homicide Investigation

Investigators have compiled the following summary of the witnesses alibis for July 3 and 4, 2014. Information on the results of attempts to verify the alibis is also included.

Confirmation types:

  • Tentative = Corroboration for all or part of the witness's time comes from someone with a personal relationship with the witness or questionable reliability.
  • Partially = Part of the alibi was confirmed or tentatively confirmed, but one or more portions of the witness's time remain uncorroborated.

Brinkman

Description: Saw Andy & Cindy Fine at Duffy's the night of July 3rd

Alibi: Brinkman said he left Duffy's around 11:00 p.m. and went to Huddle House, then left Huddle House around 12:45 a.m. and went home.

Possible Motive: Long term dislike of Andy Fine and affection for Cindy Fine.

Confirmed? Partially. Witnesses at Duffy's corroborated Brinkman's estimated departure time. Witnesses at Huddle House corroborated Brinkman's presence there and his estimated departure time. No witnesses were found to corroborate the time Brinkman arrived home. His mother reported seeing him after he woke up around noon on July 4th.

Dudley Brinkman's alibi

Dooley

Description: Saw Andy & Cindy Fine at Duffy's the night of July 3rd

Alibi: Dooley said he left Duffy's not long after Dudley Brinkman and went home.

Possible Motive: Dooley admitted to stealing Andy Fine's watch at Duffy's the night of July 3rd. Multiple witnesses reported that Fine was furious about the loss, which could've led to a potentially violent confrontation between the two men.

Confirmed? Partially. Witnesses at Duffy's confirmed he left around 11:30 p.m. No witnesses were found to corroborate the time Dooley arrived home.

Eddie Dooley's alibi

B Dykman

Description: Victim's brother-in-law

Alibi: Dykman said he and his wife went to bed early the night of July 3rd, but were awakened in the middle of the night by the arrival of his sister-in-law, Cindy Fine.

Possible Motive: Strong dislike of Andy Fine and of the way he treated Cindy Fine.

Confirmed? Tentative. Dykman's description of events was corroborated by his wife, Robyn, and his sister-in-law, Cindy, but no independent witnesses were found to corroborate his account.

Bill Dykman's alibi

R Dykman

Description: Victim's sister-in-law

Alibi: Dykman said she and her husband went to bed early the night of July 3rd, but were awakened in the middle of the night by the arrival of her sister, Cindy Fine.

Possible Motive: Strong dislike of Andy Fine and of the way he treated Cindy Fine.

Confirmed? Tentative. Dykman's description of events was eventually corroborated by her husband, Bill, and her sister, Cindy, but no independent witnesses were found to corroborate her account.

Robyn Dykman's alibi

Carl Fine

Description: Victim's half-brother

Alibi: Fine said he left Andy at Duffy's around 12:45 a.m. on July 4th and stopped by the Chevron for chicken-on-a-stick on his way home.

Possible Motive: The brothers had a lifetime of bad blood between them stemming from Andy's temper.

Confirmed? Partially. Witnesses at Duffy's confirmed he left around 12:45 a.m. The Chevron clerk working the night of July 3-4 remembered Fine coming in but could not recall what time he came in. No witnesses were found to corroborate Fine's whereabouts for the rest of that night.

Carl Fine's alibi

Cindy Fine

Description: Victim's wife

Alibi: Fine originally said she left her husband at Duffy's a little after midnight, went home, and never saw or spoke to her husband again. She later admitted that her husband arrived home around 1:30-2:00 a.m. and dragged her out to the family farmhouse in Yocona. Fine said she fled the farmhouse in their vehicle when her husband passed out and went to the Dykmans' residence, arriving sometime between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m.

Possible Motive: Reportedly suffered years of abuse from her husband, including on the night he was killed.

Confirmed? Tentative. Witnesses at Duffy's confirmed she left around 12:15 a.m. Bill and Robyn Dykman corroborated her approximate arrival time at their residence, but no independent witnesses were found to corroborate Fine's arrival at the Dykmans' or the events between Fine's departure from Duffy's and her arrival at the Dykmans'.

Cindy Fine's alibi

Laughlin

Description: Victim's employer

Alibi: Laughlin said he was drinking beer at home the night of July 3rd.

Possible Motive: Fine may have been involved in alleged illegal activity at Laughlin's garage and may have been using information about that activity to get favors and extra cash from Laughlin.

Confirmed? Tentative. Laughlin's wife, Joanna, confirmed that he was at home all night, but no independent witnesses were found to corroborate his whereabouts.

Chas Laughlin's alibi

Reagle

Description: Found victim's hand; owns farmland surrounding the Fines' farmhouse

Alibi: Reagle said he was at a party at Sardis Lake the night of July 3rd. He said he spent the night there with a lady friend and returned home the next evening after the fireworks.

Possible Motive: Wanted to acquire the land the Fine family farmhouse is on but Andy Fine refused to sell.

Confirmed? Partially. Reagle's lady friend confirmed he attended her party that weekend, but she could not corroborate his exact whereabouts at any specific time during that party.
