Gazebo in a parkBody parts found at Lamar Park

The Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that apparent human body parts were found this morning at Lamar Park in Oxford.

A frequent jogger at the park made the grisly discovery.

"I saw something shiny beside the lake and went to check it out," said the jogger, who asked not to be identified. "When I got close, the smell was awful. I knew it had to be something that used to be alive. That's a smell you don't forget."

Public information officer for the YCSD, Elizabeth Jones, wouldn't specify what body parts were found.

Jones also declined to comment on whether investigators believe this discovery is related to the severed finger found at the Rebel Inn on Sunday.

"The detectives are pursuing all avenues of investigation at this time," Jones said. "It's too early to say whether there could be any connection between the two incidents."

Portions of the Lamar Park path are closed today while the sheriff's department investigates. They are expected to reopen tomorrow.
