Smiling man with short, dark hair

Jack Thomson came into the world on November 7, 1982, in Bude, Mississippi. His father, David, was a high school teacher, and his mother, Tillie, was a caregiver.

Jack and his sister, Maribeth, who was three years younger than Jack, went with Tillie to her jobs. Jack loved the way his mother was so caring and kind to the patients and decided at a very young age that he wanted to do that when he got older.

David thought that being a caregiver or nurse was a woman's job and not for any son of his, but Jack never changed his mind.

The years flew by, and the children had good lives. When Jack was old enough to start school, he didn't like leaving his little sister, who he called Bethie, at home, but he grew to love school. When Bethie was old enough to attend, he led her all around and showed her all his favorite places.

When Bethie was 15 years old, she was abducted. Her body was discovered two weeks later behind the old mill in Bude. She had been raped and strangled. The killer was never found, and the incident changed the entire family. David became bitter, and Tillie withdrew and wouldn't talk to anyone, including Jack.

Shortly afterward, Jack graduated from high school. He left home and got a job in Oxford as a clerk in a department store. He worked there for ten years before deciding to go back to school so he could finally get a job as a nurse's aide.

Remembering the example his mother had set, Jack flew through the program, and upon graduation, was immediately hired at the Yoknapatawpha Acres nursing home.
