Interview:Michael Kane Hawke, actor blackmailed by victim

Wednesday, December 12, 2007, 10:02 AM

Detective Samantha Murphy
Detective Ted Armstrong
Michael Kane Hawke

Detective Murphy: Come in and have a seat right over there.

Michael Hawke: All right. Thank you. Is this about that crook, Victor Jennings?

Detective Murphy: We need your name and address before we can begin.

Michael Hawke: Sure. I'm Michael Hawke. I live in Beverly Hills, Ca., but right now we are staying at Grisham house, here in Oxford.

Detective Murphy: John Grisham's place off highway 6?

Michael Hawke: Yes, he is a friend.

Detective Murphy: Would you mind stating why you are living in Oxford now?

Michael Hawke: No, I don't mind, at all. I am here to prepare my testimony in the case against Victor. With the help of my wife and I, and others who were blackmailed by Victor Jennings, the Feds had him nailed. That won't happen now, so I decided this would be a good time to scout Oxford for a movie location for a new movie I'm producing and starring in.

Detective Murphy: So, you'll be here awhile, in case we have to call you to come back in for further questioning?

Michael Hawke: I hope you won't need anymore from me. I don't know anything about what happened to Jennings.

Detective Armstrong: Where were you on October 28th, this year?

Michael Hawke: We wrapped up my latest movie on October 18th and just had enough time to get home and pack again to come here to prep my testimony with the prosecutor for the case against Victor. No need to worry about that any longer.

Detective Armstrong: So you've been in Oxford since the 18th?

Michael Hawke: And before that, I was on location in Paris, France. I star in a movie about a handsome, sexy lothario who is having an affair with a married woman. My co-star was the beautiful--

Detective Armstrong: Good for you, but we don't need to know about your movies. We just need answers. Where were you on October 28th?

Michael Hawke: Sorry. I got carried away, I guess. Most people are interested. My wife and I are known as "Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood," after all.

Detective Armstrong: Not interested. Now please answer the question.

Michael Hawke: We arrived here on October 24th. That Sunday, the day Victor died, Samantha and I were shown around Oxford by the Mayor, and then we went out to dinner. We didn't get back to our place until about 10 p.m.

Detective Armstrong: I don't need to ask you if you had any reason for wanting Mr. Jennings dead, do I?

Michael Hawke: You aren't insinuating that I killed that crook, are you? I am not the kind of guy that resorts to murder. So, the answer to that is a resounding no.

Detective Murphy: Wasn't Jennings blackmailing you? How did that happen?

Michael Hawke: He was a well-known literary agent, and we hired him to represent our book to publishers. But he decided to blackmail us to make more money to keep quiet about information we shared with him from our book about Hollywood idols, and some of the most well kept secrets in the business. He was garbage. If we had known he was that kind of person, we would never have hired him to handle the deal negotiations and selling of our book.

Detective Armstrong: What about Mrs. Hollywood? Would she be angry enough to kill Jennings?

Michael Hawke: Samantha is the love of my life, and she wouldn't hurt anyone. She is known and loved by fans all over the world. Something you wouldn't know anything about. I came here to help anyway I could and you insult me!

Detective Murphy: Mr. Hawke, is there any chance that you made a secret call on Mr. Jennings on that Sunday? Maybe with the idea of giving him a piece of your mind? Or worse?

Michael Hawke: Absolutely not. We were preparing to go to court. I would in no way contact him before that. I have business to take care of. Are you done with me?

Detective Murphy: Yes, you can go now. We may be calling you in again, though.

Michael Hawke: Good day, Detective Murphy.
