Detective Armstrong and Detective Murphy of the Yoknapatawpha Sheriff's Department interviewed the witness, who is the brother of alleged assault victim Kristin Colby. The interview was conducted at the Yoknapatawpha Sheriff's Department and recorded on a portable tape recorder with the witness’s knowledge and consent.
Detective Ted Armstrong
Detective Samantha Murphy
Kyle Colby
Detective Murphy: Come in and pull that chair up.
Kyle Colby: Gee, thanks. I just love coming here and talking to the cops.
Detective Armstrong: Spit out your name and address, if you have one.
Kyle Colby: Smart guy, ain’t cha? My address is, 1006 Jackson Ave, Oxford.
Detective Murphy: We’re happy that you changed your mind about coming in. It wouldn’t have been a good idea to refuse.
Kyle Colby: I’m not here because I want to be. I was threatened that if I didn’t show up, I might accidentally fall and break an arm.
Detective Armstrong: I wonder who would do something like that. That’s just criminal.
Kyle Colby: Yeah, but some crimes never reach the courts, do they? I thought sure you would know who the bum was.
Detective Armstrong: Me? Nah. I don’t know anyone like that. Now, tell us what you know about Victor Jennings.
Kyle Colby: I know the same thing you do. He beat my sister up. I’d like to shake the hand of whoever got rid of him.
Detective Murphy: Who is your sister? We have to have that for the records.
Kyle Colby: Why do you cops always have to act so innocent. You know who she is. Kristin Colby.
Detective Murphy: Thank you. Sounds like you didn’t care much for Mr. Jennings. Did you ever speak to him, or hunt him out?
Kyle Colby: I only went to his house once. His “bullet catcher” met me at the door and told me that Jennings wasn’t available. Jennings was there, I know. He’s a big coward.
Detective Armstrong: Bullet catcher? So, that bullet catcher didn’t stop the knife you were carrying?
Kyle Colby: Knife? What? Is that why you were so insistent on my being here? To lay that on me? I wasn’t anywhere near there when that sleaze bought it.
Detective Murphy: Where were you, Kyle?
Kyle Colby: I don’t remember, but I know I wasn’t there. I usually spend Sundays down at the garage with the guys. We get together and play poker, drink some booze and just fool around. I got plenty of witnesses.
Detective Armstrong: We know you went to Jennings' carrying a ball bat, kid. Are you saying you don’t carry a knife?
Kyle Colby: Okay, so I went there with a bat. I didn’t even get to see him, I told you. I didn’t have my knife on me. And that wasn’t the same day he was offed.
Detective Armstrong: So, can you prove you didn’t see Jennings? Did any of your poker-playing buddies go along with you?
Kyle Colby: What’s up with you? I went alone, and I only saw Asher. That’s it. Talk to the muscle man with all the tattoos. He knows I didn’t get a glimpse of Jennings.
Detective Murphy: We have talked to him and probably will be doing so again. We will also be talking to you again, I’m sure.
Detective Armstrong: Yeah, so watch it.
Kyle Colby: Hopefully, I won’t have to see either of you again.
Detective Armstrong: Bye bye.
