YOKNAPATAWPHA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT
The following memo summarizes the status of the case at the time active investigation was suspended.
After multiple interviews and thorough investigation of the David Morgan Homicide, which occurred on 5/25/83, further investigation is being suspended as of this date due to lack of evidence and lack of additional leads. At this time, there is insufficient evidence to prosecute a suspect. While several subjects were found to have potential motives, there is no evidence conclusively linking any of them to the homicide. Investigation Summary Victim discovered at 4:16 p.m. at Yoknapatawpha County High School on August 25, 1983. Called in by Euell Biggers, YCHS custodian, who reported finding victim's girlfriend cradling the body, both covered with blood, on the floor of the school's music room. Victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Cause of death determined to be exsanguination resulting from an incised wound to the neck. No murder weapon was found at the scene. Investigation revealed multiple potential suspects and possible motives. Victim MORGAN, David -- Age 27. Music teacher at YCHS for XX years. Last seen alive at approximately 3:30 p.m. by Dean Adler, parent of a YCHS student. Victim's girlfriend, Pamela Kite, claimed to have discovered the victim bleeding on the floor of his classroom shortly after 4:00 p.m. Persons of Interest ADLER, Dean -- Age 40. Father of YCHS student Cynthia Adler. Dean Adler had a dispute with the victim over the daughter's grades in the victim's class. Adler also believed the victim was engaged in a romantic relationship with the daughter, who denied the allegation. No other witness was found who could corroborate the allegation or who believed it to be true. Adler admitted to confronting the victim on the day of the murder and slapping the victim's face, but denied killing him. Adler's alibi could only be partially verified and his potential motive was anger over his daughter's interactions with the victim. Dean Adler could not be ruled out as a suspect in the homicide. BARNES, Bruce -- Age 18. YCHS student. Victim helped Barnes get a music scholarship to college, over his father's objections. Barnes' alibi could not be verified, but no motive could be found for him. Barnes was ruled out as a likely suspect in the homicide, barring the discovery of any additional evidence. BIGGERS, Euell -- Age 41. YCHS custodian. Reported the discovery of the victim to police. Biggers' alibi was partially verified and no motive could be found for him. Biggers was ruled out as a likely suspect in the homicide, barring the discovery of any additional evidence. BROSHEARS, Jeanine -- Age 18. YCHS student. Worked closely with the victim on her music studies and reportedly also had a crush on the victim. Some witnesses claimed Broshears used her frequent contact with the victim to try to provoke jealousy in her boyfriend, Darrel Robinson. Broshears' alibi was tentatively verified and no motive could be found for her. Broshears was ruled out as a likely suspect in the homicide, barring the discovery of any additional evidence. HUDSON, Laura -- Age 17. YCHS student. Worked closely with the victim on her music studies and reportedly was his favorite student. Hudson's alibi was tentatively verified and no motive could be found for her. Hudson was ruled out as a likely suspect in the homicide, barring the discovery of any additional evidence. KITE, Pamela -- Age 24. YCHS teacher. Found the body and was the victim's girlfriend. Multiple witnesses reported seeing Kite arguing with the victim the day before the murder. Witnesses also claimed Kite was jealous of the time the victim spent with his students instead of with her. Kite's alibi was partially verified and her potential motive was jealousy. Kite could not be ruled out as a suspect in the homicide. ROBERTS, Jeff -- Age 18. YCHS student. The victim frequently gave Roberts detention due to Roberts' behavior in the victim's class. As a result, Roberts resented the victim, per witness statements and Roberts' interviews. Roberts initially lied to YCSD regarding his whereabouts around the time of the murder, and also apparently was infatuated with the victim's girlfriend. Roberts' alibi could only be partially verified. Roberts could not be ruled out as a suspect in the homicide. ROBINSON, Darrel -- Age 18. YCHS student. Is the boyfriend of Jeanine Broshears and, according to some witness statements, was jealous of Broshears' relationship with the victim, although Robinson denied any such jealousy. Robinson's alibi was tentatively confirmed. Robinson was ruled out as a likely suspect in the homicide, barring the discovery of any additional evidence. SHANDLEY, Raymond -- Age 42. YCHS principal. Was the victim's boss and friend. Shandley's alibi was tentatively verified and no motive could be found for him. Shandley was ruled out as a likely suspect in the homicide, barring the discovery of any additional evidence. Physical Evidence All blood evidence found at the scene was consistent with the victim's blood type. Multiple fingerprints were recovered at the scene. Some were identified as consistent with the victim, Pamela Kite (victim's girlfriend) and Angela Moore (YCHS secretary). Numerous fingerprints were unidentified, many of which likely belonged to students who were not fingerprinted due to their status as minors and/or lack of probable cause to compel exemplars. Additional Comments Victim's financial records show no unusual activity or disproportionate outstanding debts. Victim's telephone records show no unusual activity and generally low call volume.
