Interview Summaries: Residents of The Turn, victim's apartment complex

On Monday, May 24, 2004, the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department conducted a canvass at The Turn apartment complex, looking for potential witnesses who saw or heard anything on the night of the murder of Kristi Waterson, Saturday, May 22, 2004. The interviews summarized are some of the most typical or relevant to the investigation and are representative of all interviews conducted.

  • Rob Miller, 30, realtor, 588 Hathorn Road, Apt. 1635

Mr. Miller said he had just returned from a date at approximately 1:15 a.m. on the night of May 22, 2004, when he noticed a young male walking out of the apartment complex. "It was odd seeing someone walking at that time of night, but I just figured it was a drunk kid." Mr. Miller was quick to qualify that comment by saying that the subject was not acting intoxicated or weaving or acting weird. "I just thought he must have been drunk since he was walking instead of driving. He wasn't acting hammered or anything though." He said that the male was tall and wearing khaki pants and a light colored shirt. Mr. Miller noted that he had drunk "a couple" of alcoholic beverages during the evening himself.

  • Beth Gilbert, 26, waitress, 588 Hathorn Road, Apt. 112

Ms. Gilbert said that she saw a tall, college-age male climbing the steps to the second floor of the building. She was cleaning out her car and noticed that the male removed a baseball cap and put it in a duffel bag he was carrying. She described the male as wearing light brown pants and a blue button-down shirt. He ruffled his hair "like he was trying to fix it from the hat being on, you know, like he didn't want to have hat head. I figured he was going to pick up a date or something and just wanted to look nice." Ms. Gilbert said that the man always had his back to her so she could not describe his face. Ms. Gilbert remembered the time of the incident as "Just before eight o'clock. My show wasn't on yet and I was trying to get it done before it came on." Ms. Gilbert went into her apartment for some cleaner to scrub her windshield and did not see which apartment the subject entered.

  • Rebecca Musgrove, 23, student, 588 Hathorn Road, Apt. 26

Mrs. Musgrove said that she was studying late on the night in question. "I'm a law student, second year, so I pretty much have to study year round. Semesters don't mean much to me." She saw a college-aged male, whom she identified as "looking like Hunter Nelson," walking through the apartment complex at approximately 10:05 p.m. She described the subject as wearing light brown pants, a dark blue shirt, and a baseball cap with Greek lettering on it. "At least, I'm pretty sure it was him. Hunter always has a Delta hat on." She said the subject was walking quickly and purposefully in the parking lot and that the subject could have come from her building.

  • Jack Owens, 29, investment banker, 588 Hathorn Road, Apt. 422

Mr. Owens said was relaxing on his balcony when he saw an individual who "looked like Hunter Nelson" walking across the courtyard at approximately 7:55 p.m. The individual had on light pants and a dark shirt. "I yelled at him, but I guess he didn't hear me. He didn't look up or anything. I knew it was Hunter ‘cause he was wearing that dopey hat of his." Mr. Owens said that he is a UM graduate and Delta Tau Chi alumni, and that he works as an investment banker at the Oxford Branch of the Bank of Mississippi. Mr. Owens said that he knows Mr. Nelson from seeing him at the bank and at fraternity alumni parties, football games and other campus events.
