Interview Summaries: Residents of Campus Walk Apartments, near victim's apartment

On Tuesday, May 25, 2004, the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department conducted a canvass at the Campus Walk apartment complex, looking for potential witnesses who saw or heard anything on the night of the murder of Kristi Waterson, Saturday, May 22, 2004. The interviews summarized are some of the most typical or relevant to the investigation and are representative of all interviews conducted.

  • Joe Brady, student, age 24, 410 Hathorn Road, Bldg. 110, Apt #D

The witness said he took his dog out for a walk between 7:45 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on the night of May 22, 2004. He noticed a white male, tall and medium build in his early 20s, walking through the apartment complex parking lot headed in a generally southeasterly direction. "He was kind of on the edge of our complex. As odd as it sounds, there just aren't many people who walk around here. On campus or in town, maybe. But everybody I know that lives here usually drives." The witness said that the subject he observed wore khaki pants, a blue long sleeve shirt, and a baseball cap. The witness said the individual had "light brown hair, cut short," but did not have a beard, mustache, or distinguishing facial features that the witness remembered.

  • Ricky Fernandez, student, age 20, 410 Hathorn Road, Bldg. 118, Apt. #C

The witness said he was "just hanging out outside not doing nuthin" on the evening of May 22, 2004, when he observed a white male of college age "dressed like a prep and with some punk hat on his head" carrying a "big gym bag" walking through the complex parking lot "just about half past one in the morning." The witness went on to say that the individual looked "wimpy" with "short prep hair" and appeared to be moving in a generally northerly direction. The individual was dressed "like all the frat boys do -- tan pants, long sleeve shirt with a collar,"  and a light colored baseball cap worn "the wrong way -- frontwards" with indistinguishable letters on the front. The subject, according to the witness, "didn't have no facial hair."

  • Kristen Murphy, student, age 20, 410 Hathorn Road, Bldg. 116, Apt #A

The witness said she was grilling hamburgers at approximately 7:55 p.m. and noticed a college-aged white male, who was tall and of medium build, walking through the apartment complex parking lot, headed in a southeastern direction. The witness stated that the male wore light colored pants, a blue shirt, and a baseball cap. The witness also stated that the male also carried a black duffel bag or overnight bag. "He had on one of those canvas belts, with the ring, you know? Not like a leather belt with the holes, but one of those canvas ones where you wrap it through the rings. J. Crew is selling a lot of those now. I noticed it because there seemed to be a lot of extra, you know? This long bit of the belt flapping around." The witness said the subject was not acting suspiciously, but appeared to be walking with a definite purpose. "He wasn't lurking about or anything. I didn't think anything about it at the time. It was only after I heard about the murder that I wondered if he had something to do with it." According to the witness, the subject was clean-shaven and had no distinguishing facial characteristics, but might have been "kind of cute."

  • Rebecca Young, age 24, 410 Hathorn Road, Bldg. 112, Apt #B

The witness said that she was studying late on the night in question. "I'm a law student, second year, so I pretty much have to study year round, semesters don't mean much to me." The witness said that at 1:20 a.m., during a break from her studies, she saw a tall, college-aged white male of medium build walking through the apartment complex parking lot in a generally northeasterly direction. The witness did not see where the subject came from or where he went after he exited the complex parking lot. The witness described the subject as wearing light pants, a medium colored shirt, and a baseball cap with Greek lettering on it. The witness did not see the individual Greek letters and was unable to state the subject's hair color or facial characteristics, but did not remember seeing "a long beard or anything." The witness said the subject appeared to be "walking quickly and purposefully."
