The following is a summary of short interviews with former football colleagues of James "Jamie" Washington.
Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's department made every effort to contact either in person, by mail or email or by phone, the persons present on the roster for the Ole Miss Rebels football team during James Washington's years on the squad.
In all, some 126 people have been identified as having been part of the Rebels squad. Fifty-five of those have been contacted successfully by phone, mail, email, or in person. A typical response was like this one: Trey McClure of Pinson, Tenn.: (Phone) remembered Washington as okay guy, good player, lost interest after injury, shocked at death.
The summaries below are those picked out by the detectives as worthy of attention and/or a follow up.
- Adam Bethrie of Louisville, Miss.: (Phone) Said he didn't remember Washington that well, but recalls he was the guy Tunney hit one time.
- Belton Bracies of Decatur, Ga.: (Phone) said he was "immensely saddened and shocked" over his friend's death. Said he had always wondered what happened to Washington. Said he and Washington used to "talk sports" a lot. They sometimes watched sports together in a local bar and liked each other's company as neither of them really drank, "not like some of the guys did anyway."
- Eddie Bryson of Baxley, Ga.: (Phone) Remembered Washington though they weren't close friends. Sometimes talked, but just college stuff or to share a joke. Said Washington was "treated badly by the coach after injury." Remembers coach being "very harsh" with Washington.
- Justin Canady of Oxford, Miss.: (Email) wrote a reply to say he did remember Washington, he thought he left college over personal problems. Recalled seeing Tunney strike Washington.
- Chad Morgan of Louisville, Miss.: (Phone). Went to movies once or twice with Washington and group of friends, including Chris Zimmer, and sometimes saw Washington with Yvonne Bremer. Washington always seemed "pretty happy sort of guy" who "went through a hard time after the injury, but I thought he was doing OK before he left." Was at Phoenix apartments when Washington was there. He remembers Washington and Chris Zimmer cleared out Washington's belongings when Washington left the apartments. Didn't see him again after that.
- Dwight Nelson of Medford, N.J.: (Mail) wrote back via email and said he played on same team as Washington sometimes and was sorry to learn of his death. Said Washington had difficulties with coach Tunney and he saw Tunney hit him.
- Chris Parfitt of Detroit, Miss.: (Phone) remembers Washington. They weren't close through football but did know each other as Washington's then-girlfriend Yvonne Bremer and Parfitt's then-girlfriend Tina Paige were friends and colleagues at the fencing club at Ole Miss. Paige once threw a drink in Washington's face after an argument but Parfitt wasn't present at time.
- Cameron Prince of Wilmington, Ohio: (Phone) remembers Washington when he was with Yvonne Bremer, didn't really notice him until then. Cameron was friends with Bremer's previous boyfriend, Hugh Faber, and remembers Faber asking him about Washington. Thinks this would have been in late 2001.
- Jesse Robinson of Jackson, Miss.: (Phone) said he and Washington would chat and joke in the first couple of years when Washington was part of the main squad but once Washington was injured he'd see him around and that was about it.
- Lachlan Sanders of Tullahoma, Tenn.: (Phone) said he liked Washington. He also roomed at the Phoenix apartments where Washington stayed. He remembers hearing Washington getting into an argument a few days after the Red-Blue game. He didn’t see who it was but thought one of the voices he heard was Dwight Nelson.
- Greg Urbanski of Tampa, Fla.: (Email) wrote to say he remembered Washington taking his place for the Red-Blue game. "We were never friends, though I am sorry to hear he died."
- Michael Van Housen of Oxford, Miss.: (In-Person) remembers Washington. They both lived at Stockard Hall for the first couple of years at college. Didn't see a lot of him after injury but remembers the Red Blue game in 2002. "Washington played well that day." Said he saw Washington around after that, can't be sure but possibly at the Double Decker festival which was shortly after the Red-Blue game. "It was definitely after the game – we talked about his touchdown."
