The witness was identified as the estranged husband of the victim's ex-girlfriend. He was interviewed at the Germantown police department by members of the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department. The interview was recorded on a portable audio tape recorder with the witness's knowledge and consent.
SM = Det. Sam Murphy
TA = Det. Ted Armstrong
HF = Hugh Faber
SM: Good morning.
HF: Is it? I hadn't noticed.
TA: It's good for us to get out of Oxford again.
SM: Okay, let's start with the easy stuff, would you state your name and address please?
HF: My name is Hugh Faber, and I am currently living at 2332 McVay Cove
TA: You normally live with your wife in Germantown, Tennessee?
HF: That's right.
SM: Why are you living here at the moment, Mr. Faber?
HF: I don't see that's any of your goddamn business, detective.
TA: Everything is our business Mr. Faber, until we decide otherwise, okay?
HF: Well it has nothing to do with what you've come to see me about today.
SM: We talked to Ms. Bremer, she says you moved down here, you had a few problems but that she expects to be able to work them out, would you agree with that Hugh?
HF: Yeah, we probably will.
TA: She's a great looking gal -- you don't want her all alone for too long, do you?
HF: What the f*** is that supposed to mean?
SM: Calm down, Mr. Faber. I think Detective Armstrong is just trying to tell you to sort out your problems and get back to your wife.
HF: Well Ann Landers here can keep her relationship advice to himself.
TA: No problem, Mr. Faber. When did you move down here anyway?
HF: Couple of weeks ago.
TA: Was that after you heard about Mr. Washington's body being found?
HF: Yes.
SM: You didn't fight about him, did you? Was your wife upset when she found out about her former boyfriend?
HF: Don't call him that, he was nothing to Yvonne, nothing.
TA: She dated him, Mr. Faber. She dumped you and dated him, didn't she? That's got to hurt.
HF: Yeah it hurt, of course it f******' hurt, but I didn't kill him.
SM: So when did you and Ms. Bremer meet, anyway?
HF: We met in 1995, at high school.
SM: Childhood sweethearts? You two have known each other a while then. Did you ask her out?
HF: Yeah, I was 15 and she was 14. I'd liked her for ages. I asked her out for a pizza.
TA: So you dated her since 1995. When did you two split up at college?
HF: 2001. June 7, 2001.
SM: You'd been seeing Ms. Bremer for 5 or 6 years by then. That must have been difficult for you, and for her too.
HF: Six years and 44 days. It wasn't easy. But Yvonne seemed to cope.
TA: How did you feel when you saw her with someone else?
HF: Oh I was just so happy for her. I thought it was great.
SM: Did you know Jamie Washington?
HF: No.
TA: Did you know who he was? Would you have recognized him?
HF: When Yvonne started seeing that person, I saw what he looked like.
SM: Mr. Faber, did you ever talk to him or contact him when they were together?
HF: Can you stop putting it like that?
TA: It upsets you to think your ex-girlfriend was seeing someone else? Even though she wasn't with you?
HF: Yes it upsets me, Detective, is that so wrong?
TA: Depends what you did about it, I guess.
HF: I didn't do anything about it. I used to talk to Yvonne sometimes when she was....when she was...with him...I wanted her back with me, we belonged together, but I didn't hurt him.
TA: And you didn't threaten him or make him feel like he was in danger if he kept seeing your girl?
SM: For the benefit of the tape witness is shaking his head to signify a no response. Mr. Faber, can you keep your responses verbal please?
HF: Sorry.
TA: Okay, Mr. Faber, there still seems to be some unresolved feelings here. Why can't you accept that Ms. Bremer saw someone else? Did she start seeing him before you broke up?
HF: No, it's not that. I ... you wouldn't understand.
SM: Try us.
HF: I have to try really hard to block my feelings out about Yvonne and ... and ...James Washington. I wanted us to be each other's only loves. I knew and loved Yvonne from when she was a 14-year-old girl. It's stupid, I know, but I pictured us being together forever. Raising kids, hi honey I'm home...and part of what made that so special was the thought that we would only have ever known each other.
SM: Do you mean sexually?
HF: Well...yeah ...
TA: Do you know whether she slept with Mr. Washington?
HF: She says she didn't. ... But I don't know if I can believe her. I hate the thought of them together.
SM: I take it the publicity about Mr. Washington and this investigation has put you under a lot of pressure.
HF: You have no idea. It's been a nightmare. Yvonne cried when she heard. What, was she in love with the asshole or something?
TA: Many people would be upset at finding out a friend was murdered. Did you two fight about it?
HF: Yes. I said some terrible things, I ...I was so angry, it's like he's always there hanging over us, he spoiled our relationship. Do you think that's going to get any better now? Now she knows he's dead. Now he's the f****** martyr -- poor little Jamie.
TA: You've never had feelings for anyone else?
HF: Never.
SM: Did Mr. Washington ever contact you? Send you anything?
HF: What do you mean?
SM: Like a card or a letter?
HF: No, he didn't.
TA: Has Ms. Bremer ever told you anything about Mr. Washington that might help our investigation?
HF: I don't encourage her to talk about him.
TA: Did you not ask why they broke up?
HF: I prefer not to think of it at all. They didn't belong together.
SM: So you don't know that he had money troubles?
HF: No.
TA: But you know he spent a lot of money on Ms. Bremer, right? Does she still have the fencing equipment Mr. Washington bought for her?
HF: Yeah, she told me about that.
SM: Does she still have the equipment?
HF: I don't know. Maybe -- who cares?
TA: How did you feel about him doing all this for her?
HF: I don't feel anything. What did Yvonne say about it?
SM: She told us he spent some money on her, it made her feel uncomfortable, they broke up shortly afterwards.
HF: She never explained it like that to me. Why wouldn't she tell me that?
TA: You'll have to ask her, Mr. Faber. Why don't you talk to her?
HF: You don't know what she's like. I can't talk about it without getting angry and she just walks out if I do that. We've reached a compromise where we don't mention that time. Or at least we had until you found his body.
SM: Let's go back a moment, Mr. Faber. Do you remember what you were doing in April 2002?
HF: Trying to get back with Yvonne.
SM: Apart from that. Did you go to the Red and Blue game for instance?
HF: No, I didn't.
TA: What about the Double Decker Festival?
HF: Yeah I went to that. It was the first time I could get Yvonne to go out with me since...well, since, you know...
SM: What did you do?
HF: We just walked around, talked, watched some bands, nothing heavy at all, I felt better after that night.
SM: Was it just you and Ms. Bremer, or was anyone else with you?
HF: Tina might have been there. Tina Paige, she was a friend of Yvonne's from the fencing crowd. Yes, I think we talked to her. There were lots of people we knew, we'd stop and talk to people all the time.
SM: Did you know many of Ms. Bremer's friends?
HF: Yes I got to know most of the people she knew eventually.
TA: How did you get along with them?
HF: Fine.
TA: When was the last time you saw Jamie Washington?
HF: I don't know. I couldn't say for sure, I didn't really make a point of seeing him, I ...tried to avoid him if anything. It was probably March something, end of March.
SM: Is that when he and Ms. Bremer split up?
HF: Yes.
TA: Did Mr. Washington try to contact Ms. Bremer after they broke up?
HF: Yes he did. Yvonne didn't want anything to do with him. He sent her emails.
TA: Did you see these emails?
HF: No, not really, Yvonne mentioned them one time to me but I told her I never wanted to hear that *******'s name mentioned ever again.
SM: How did she react to that?
HF: Yvonne's Yvonne, detective. She reacts however she wants. I express my opinion but I'm not sure how much notice she ever takes.
TA: Okay Mr. Faber, one last question I think for now. Were you aware Jamie Washington was missing? Did you hear anything about that at all?
HF: Yvonne mentioned Jamie had left. I heard someone mention that he had been reported missing, then someone else said he had been found. It was just rumors around college is all. People told me because they thought I might want to know. I wasn't interested. I was glad he was gone.
TA: Are you saying you're glad he's dead?
HF: I don't feel anything. Except pissed off that he's still affecting my life.
SM: Okay Mr. Faber, that will do. We'll contact you again if we feel we need to speak to you.
HF: I hope not.
