Interview: Hugh Faber, estranged husband of victim's ex-girlfriend

Thursday, October 19, 11:20 a.m.

The witness was identified as the estranged husband of the victim's ex-girlfriend. He was interviewed at the Germantown police department by members of the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department. The interview was recorded on a portable audio tape recorder with the witness's knowledge and consent.

SM = Det. Sam Murphy
TA
= Det. Ted Armstrong
HF = Hugh Faber

SM: Good morning, thanks for seeing us again, Mr. Faber.

HF: Yeah, like I had a choice.

TA: There's always a choice, Mr. Faber -- the easy way or the hard way.

SM: Okay, would you state your name and address please?

HF: My name is still Hugh Faber, and I am still living at 2332 McVay Cove.

TA: You haven't gone home to live with your wife again?

HF: Not yet.

SM: Why not, Mr. Faber?

HF: It's this murder business. I can't get my head straight. I keep seeing how upset Yvonne was when she heard.

TA: You seem jealous of Mr. Washington.

HF: I don't know anymore, why did Yvonne have to do that to me?

SM: Do what?

HF: Go out with that football-playing p****.

TA: James Washington, you mean?

HF: Yeah, I mean she knew I worshipped the ground she walked on. No one ever put his girl on a bigger pedestal, how could she hurt me like that? ... and then ... then, when we're finally together, forever, I have to see how much she still cares about him? I deserve better.

SM: Why is it this all has to be about you, Mr. Faber?

HF: What do you mean?

TA: We mean, you seem to think everything your wife has ever done is directly connected to you.

HF: Well, of course it is.

TA: Isn't it possible that she never gave you a thought when she went out with Mr. Washington? That she just enjoyed his company and enjoyed their friendship?

HF: I don't know.

SM: Have you ever considered any form of treatment for your feelings of anger and jealousy?

HF: I don't need treatment. I need a wife I can trust.

TA: I think you've got one, Mr. Faber -- you just don't realize it. So when did you and Yvonne have that first date again -- April 1995, wasn't it?

HF: Yeah it was.

SM: What was the exact date, do you remember?

HF: April 25, 1995, it was a Thursday.

SM: I thought so, we did the math when we went over your answers from the first interview. You do realize that April 25 is the last time we can verify James Washington was alive, don't you?

HF: He was alive after that wasn't he?

TA: What makes you say that, Mr. Faber?

HF: Those rumors around college, I heard he was missing but then he got in contact.

SM: Those rumors you weren't interested in, you mean?

HF: Okay, so maybe I paid more attention to them than I said.

TA: Didn't you also propose marriage to Yvonne on April 25 too?

HF: Yeah, well I thought it was romantic, being our anniversary and all.

SM: Anniversary of what, the day you killed James Washington?

HF: No -- the anniversary of our first date.

TA: I find it interesting that these anniversaries are so important to you. 2002 must have been the first time you and Yvonne didn't spend an anniversary together as a couple.

HF: We went out, I told you we went to the Double Decker festival together.

SM: Yes but not actually as a couple, a dating couple?

HF: Well no, not technically, but it was pretty much the same thing.

TA: And who was to blame for this, who stopped you from celebrating what would have been your seventh anniversary with Ms. Bremer?

HF: You really think I killed him, don't you?

TA: I'll be honest with you, Mr. Faber -- I think you could have done it.

HF: Oh, I could have! I hated him so bad. I wished the sonofabitch had never been born.

TA: You wanted to hurt him, didn't you?

HF: I wanted to hurt him as much as he hurt me.

SM: Did you?

HF: No, I didn't. Look I wanted to, I admit I ... I couldn't stand to have him around as a reminder of Yvonne's betrayal. I didn't do anything about it though. I didn't kill him.

TA: Did you see him, that night at the festival, when you were with Yvonne?

HF: Yes I did.

SM: When? What was he doing?

HF: He was by the main stage, most people were waiting for a band to come on, he was looking around, like he was looking for Yvonne or something.

SM: Did he see her? Or you?

HF: No I don't think so, I was worried Yvonne would see him so I steered her away, took her to get a drink.

TA: Why didn't you tell us this before?

HF: I don't know -- I just thought it sounded bad. I was going to tell you...and then I thought, why bother?

SM: Did you see him leave that area? Did you see Mr. Washington again that evening?

HF: No, I didn't. I put some distance between us and him and when we came around to that stage area again he wasn't around. Good thing too.

TA: Why was that a good thing?

HF: Because Yvonne asked that weaselly little guy Rimmer, or whatever the f*** his name is if he had seen him.

TA: You heard her say that?

HF: Oh yeah. She thought I wasn't listening. You've got to have eyes and ears in the back of your head sometimes, you know?

SM: Jealousy is hard work, isn't it?

HF: If you say so.

SM: So there you were having a good time, and suddenly Mr. Washington is ruining your evening, because now you know Yvonne is asking about him?

HF: I tried not to let it ruin my evening. I was trying real hard to be on my best behavior.

TA: Because you wanted to get back with Yvonne?

HF: Yeah.

TA: How much contact did you have with Yvonne when she and Mr. Washington were dating?

HF: I used to talk to her sometimes.

SM: Did you follow her? Spy on her?

HF: No.

TA: Did you contact James Washington during this time?

HF: No.

SM: You didn't threaten him or anything?

HF: No. ... I didn't.

TA: Have you ever been violent towards Yvonne?

HF: No. How could you think such a thing?

SM: You seem so angry at her. It wouldn't be a surprise to us if that anger spilled over on occasion.

HF: Only cowards hit women.

TA: Real men take it out on the other guy?

HF: You know what I mean.

SM: How did you and Yvonne get back together again after she broke up with Mr. Washington?

HF: I just kept talking to her. We started to go out again and things went from there.

SM: When you and Yvonne went to the Double Decker Festival on April 25, 2002, were you together all evening?

HF: Yes we were.

TA: Did you pick her up?

HF: Yeah I did. She wasn't ready when I got there, I had to wait a while, but then that's pretty normal for Yvonne. We went out, we had a good time and then I walked her home.

SM: What time did you get her home?

HF: I don't know, it was pretty late, say after 12.

SM: Would anyone be able to verify your movements after that?

HF: I don't know, I think I just went home, I don't remember talking to anyone else. I went home and went to bed.

SM: Okay, Mr. Faber, I think that's enough for now. You're free to go.

HF: Oh, okay.

TA: We might need to speak to you again though.

HF: I'll be glad when this is over.

TA: We all will, Mr. Faber.
