The witness, Pauline Jones, slapped Oscar Knight at the
Marshall Family
Reunion. The interview was conducted at the Yoknapatawpha Sheriff's
Department
and recorded on a portable tape recorder with the witness's knowledge
and
consent.
Detective Samantha Murphy
Detective Ted Armstrong
Pauline Jones
Detective Murphy: Good morning, Mrs. Jones. Please state your
name and
address for the record.
Pauline Jones: Hello detectives. My name is Pauline Jones and
I live at 1368 Jefferson Avenue.
Please call me Pauline. Has
this anything to do with Oscar Knight? I've been reading in the
paper
about that finger found in Oscar's room and later about the body parts
found.
Do you think he's responsible for this?
Detective Murphy: We have no evidence of that at this time.
It's an ongoing
investigation and we've yet to locate Mr. Knight.
Detective Armstrong: Pauline, how do you know Oscar
Knight?
Pauline Jones: I remember Oscar from our school days. I didn't
know him that
well and I probably wouldn't have noticed him at all at the reunion if
Lizzie
hadn't mentioned him. She called him Ozzie and said she wouldn't have
recognized him if Steve 'told her who he was.
Detective Armstrong: I'm glad to hear you were at the
reunion because
we actually want to ask you a few questions about it. Is this the first
one
you've attended?
Pauline Jones: No, I go to the reunion every year. It's always
a lot of fun,
and I get to see old friends I haven't seen in years.
Detective Murphy: Do you know Elizabeth Barton and Steve
Marshall?
Pauline Jones: Lizzie's my best friend in the world. We met
twenty years ago
after we both lost our husbands. Steve Marshall and Lizzie have known
each
other since high school so he always invites us to the reunion.
Detective Murphy: We have two witnesses that saw
Elizabeth Barton
arguing with Oscar Knight at the reunion. Can you tell us
anything about
that argument?
Pauline Jones: I know they argued. Lizzie said Oscar was
drinking and
being rude. She wouldn't tell me what he said to her but she was very
upset and
she left early. I didn't want her to leave I tried to get her to stay
but she
wouldn't. I think it was around three p.m.
Detective Armstrong: Pauline, these same witnesses said they
saw you arguing
with Oscar earlier. Can you tell us why you and Oscar were having an
argument?
Pauline Jones: When I saw Oscar, he reeked of alcohol.
He was being
such a jerk. He made me angry so I slapped him across the face as hard
as I
could. He just laughed at me and told me to be sure and tell Lizzie
what he
said. I didn't tell Lizzie what he said. Frankly I didn't quite
understand what
he meant.
Detective Armstrong: How about telling us what Oscar said to
you that upset
you so much you slapped him?
Pauline Jones: Ok if I have to. First off he was crude saying
stuff like he,
Lizzie and I should have a threesome. Then he told me to tell
Lizzie she
was a hot little number back in the day and he'd like a piece of that
again. I
was fuming so I drew my hand back and slapped him. I wish I had thought
to
punch him in the nose.
Detective Armstrong: Pauline, why do you think he made
those remarks
about Lizzie?
Pauline Jones: I have no idea. He seems to think he's the best
thing since
sliced bread. I think he gets his kicks out of insulting women.
Lizzie
told me they were friends back in high school but she soon saw his true
colors
and ditched him as a friend. Lizzie said she hasn't seen him since,
until the
reunion.
Detective Armstrong: Pauline, did you see Oscar leave
the reunion?
Pauline Jones: After Lizzie left I met up with old friends and
I didn't see
Oscar anymore that evening. I don't know when he left but he said
earlier he
was meeting someone later that night.
Detective Armstrong: Did Oscar say who he was meeting?
Pauline Jones: No, he wouldn't say. He acted like it was a big
secret. He's
such a jerk.
Detective Murphy: Pauline, we want to thank you for coming in
today. You've
been very helpful.
Pauline Jones: You're welcome and I hope you find Oscar
soon. Good
day.
