Witness Interview: Johnny McPhail

Detective Andersen interviewed Mr. Johnny McPhail, the missing person's next-door neighbor, the night the disappearance was reported.

Q: Please state your name and date of birth for the record.
A: Johnny McPhail, born December 24, 1941.

Q: Thank you. When did you first spot the stalker?
A: The night I spoke with the girls. Just a few days ago.

Q: What did you see?
A: Well, there was definitely someone in the tree in their front yard. I was brushing my teeth in the upstairs bathroom and I kept seeing these lights from the tree.

Q: What did you do?
A: I put on my coat and went outside. He must have heard me, because I just saw someone running way down the street and then he disappeared around the corner.

Q: You're sure it was a man?
A: I didn't see. But it had to be.

Q: Had you been at home all evening?
A: Yes. I came home from the store around six, and I was inside after that.

Q: Did you notice any cars parking nearby or any noise?
A: No.

Q: What happened after you saw the suspect run away?
A: I went over to Lee's and told her.

Q: How did she react?
A: She was mad. The other one got real pale. She didn't say much.

Q: You didn't report it?
A: No. I thought that should be up to them. They didn't really talk about it when I was there, but I think Lee was planning to call the police when I left.

Q: How long have you known Ms. Perez?
A: Since she moved in, it was last fall. I really like her. She's a very nice young woman.

Q: What about Ms. Knight?
A: I never met her. She keeps to herself.

Q: When was the last time you saw her?
A: Not since that night. She's gone a lot, so sometimes I don't see her for days. Mostly I see her when she's coming or going.
