The witness, identified as the best friend of the victim, was interviewed by Detectives S. Murphy and T. Armstrong at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Office. The interview was recorded on a portable, audio tape recorder with the witness' knowledge and consent.
SM= Detective S. Murphy
TA= Detective T. Armstrong
KP= Kayla Pecan
TA: Thank you for coming in again Miss Pecan. Would you please state your name and address for the record.
KP: Yes it's Kayla Pecan and I live at 1401 Chikasaw Road.
TA: Thank you Miss Pecan, we just have a few follow-up questions we would like to ask you.
KP: You're welcome Detective. How can I help you?
SM: You said before in our last interview that you hadn't seen Amy for about a week before she was murdered.
KP: Yes, it was about a week.
SM: Did you talk to her on the phone a lot?
KP: Oh, yes we would talk almost every day.
TA: Did you talk to her on the day she was murdered?
KP: No, I didn't. I talked to her the day before though.
TA: What did you talk about?
KP: Well, she was having some problems with someone calling her. Late at night type of calls.
SM: Did she tell you who it was that was calling?
KP: She said it was Carl's ex-girlfriend, Helen.
SM: What else did you talk about?
KP: Oh, just best friend kind of stuff.
TA: Like what? Did she talk about moving out?
KP: Moving out? Oh, well . . . she did mention that she was thinking of moving out.
SM: Just mentioned?
KP: Well . . . we talked about getting a place together, and I told her she could move in with me at my place until we found a bigger place.
TA: Why would she want to do that? She is living at home, for free. She doesn't have to buy food, pay rent, pay utilities. Why would she want to move out?
KP: Well, she was having problems with her mom.
SM: What kind of problems?
KP: Her mom could be.. how should I say this... overbearing?
SM: In what way?
KP: She hovered over Amy all the time, always in her business.
TA: So, you offered to let Amy live at your place, until you two could find a bigger place? Did Amy tell her mom that?
KP: She said she was going to, but I don't know if she did or not.
SM: How do you think her mom would take that?
KP: Oh, probably not well, but I don't think she would kill her own daughter over it. I mean, knowing her mom I know she would still try to control Amy's life.
SM: Thank you for coming in today Miss Pecan, we appreciate your time.
KP: Oh, your welcome. Can I ask a question?
TA: Certainly.
KP: Well, my car was stolen on December 4th, and I reported it a few days later... you know with
Amy being murdered and all, I just wasn't thinking clearly. It was found, and I want to get it out of the impound lot . . . but it costs so much money. I was wondering if maybe you could help me out by putting in a good word maybe, and let me get it out for free? I mean, if not free at least for a lot less.
SM: When did you report it stolen?
KP: Oh, a couple days after Amy's death. The 6th I think.
TA: When was it found?
KP: Oh, like a week later, on a dirt road outside of town.
SM: What kind of car is it?
KP: It's a '93 Chevy Impala.
TA: Well, I can't promise you anything Miss Pecan, but we will see what we can do. We'll give you a call in a day or two.
KP: Oh, thank you.
TA: One last thing Miss Pecan.
KP: Yes?
TA: Was Amy at your residence lately?
KP: About a week before she was murdered, she was over.
SM: So if we were to ask you if we could search your residence, you would be fine with that?
KP: Why would you want to search my place? You can't think I was involved?
TA: Everyone is a suspect Miss Pecan, until we discover the true murderer.
KP: Well, you have no right to blame me, I was her best friend. Yes, I would have a problem with you searching my house. Its messed up for you to even think I would have something to do with her murder. I was her best friend. You two really don't have a clue who did this do you? You know what, forget about my car too, I'll get it out myself. Losers.
