Interview: Mary Bledsoe, the victim’s mother

Tuesday, December 6, 2005 - 1:05 p.m.

This witness, identified as the mother of the victim, was interviewed at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Office after positively identifying the body of her daughter.  The interview was conducted by Det. Sam Murphy and Det. Ted Armstrong, and was recorded on a portable audio tape recorder with the witness's knowledge and consent.

TA = Detective T. Armstrong
SM = Detective S. Murphy
MB = Mary Bledsoe

SM: Thank you for agreeing to speak with us today, Ms. Bledsoe. We’re very sorry for your loss and I know it's very difficult to lose a loved one.  We just have a few questions for you.

MB: Thank you.  I’ll try to help if I can.

SM: First off, for the record, please state your name and address.

MB: My name is Mary Bledsoe and I live at 17 Van Buren St. here in Oxford.

SM: Thank you Ms. Bledsoe.  Now, can you tell me, when was the last time you saw your daughter?

MB: I saw her on Sunday at home.  I left to run some errands and she was waiting in the garage for a ride to a job interview.  I never thought that would be the last time I....I...

SM: Ms. Bledsoe, do you need a minute to compose yourself?

MB: No, I’m fine.  Go ahead.

SM: Okay.  So Amy was waiting on a ride to a job interview.  Who was going to give her a ride?

MB: It was a man named Greg, Greg Cassidy.  He was the one interviewing her for a job.

TA: What does this Greg Cassidy do?  What kind of job was Amy interviewing for?

MB: I really don’t know.  She didn’t tell me.  She just said he worked out of his home.  I had planned to ask her again later...

SM: So the last time you saw Amy was before you left to run errands?

MB: Yes, I didn’t see her again after that.  After the interview, she planned to go stay with a friend overnight.  Her friend was going to pick her up from the interview, so she wasn't home that night.  I should've told her to come home.  This never would have happened...

TA:  Can you tell us who the friend is that she was going to stay with?

MB:  Her name is Kayla Pecan.  They've been best friends for a long time.

SM:  So, Ms. Pecan was going to pick Amy up from Greg Cassidy's home office after the interview and take Amy to her house for the night?

MB:  Yes, that's what she told me.

TA: Was Amy acting funny?  Did it seem like something was bothering her?

MB: No, she was acting okay.  I think she may have had an argument with her boyfriend but she didn’t really let it get to her.  She was a very strong person.

SM: What is her boyfriend's name?

MB: His name is Carl Yates.  They’ve been dating for a while, but I really don’t like him.  I guess Amy did though.

TA: Why is it that you don’t like Mr. Yates?

MB: I just don’t think he was the right man for my daughter.  She needs to have standards and find a man that will really take care of her and a family.

TA: And you don’t think Carl Yates could do that?

MB: I doubt it.

SM: Ms. Bledsoe, when we first contacted you about your daughter, we got your phone number from her cell phone that was found at the scene.  Did she call you on Sunday?

MB: I honestly can’t remember right now.  She called me a lot so it’s hard for me to say right now.  My head is just so foggy.  I think I’m just still in shock from all of this.  I’m sure she probably did.....(sniff) I’m sorry.....

TA: Let's go back to Greg Cassidy for a minute.  Why was he going to pick Amy up for the interview?  That sounds a little funny to me, an employer picking up a potential employee.

MB: Well, she’s between cars right now, so he offered.

SM: Okay.  Do you and your daughter live alone?

MB: Yes, we do.  Her father and I divorced a couple of years ago.

TA: Do you know when Amy last saw her father?

MB: No, I don’t know.  Amy didn’t go around him much since he’s been remarried.  His new wife, let’s just say, she doesn’t like Amy much.

TA: Why doesn’t she like Amy?

MB: She’s just jealous... I don’t know...

SM: Ms. Bledsoe, do you know who would’ve wanted to do this to your daughter?

MB: No, my daughter was a sweet angel and she was good to everyone.  I can’t imagine, even if someone disliked her, that they could do this to my baby.  She was my angel.  Please find who did this to her!

SM: That’s what we plan to do, Ms. Bledsoe.  Can you think of anything else that may be pertinent to our investigation?

MB: No, not right now.  I can barely think straight right now.

TA: Okay, thanks for speaking with us today.  Here’s our card.  If you think of anything, please call us.

SM: We’re very sorry for your loss, Ms. Bledsoe.

MB: Thank you.  Please find who did this.

SM: We will.  We’ll be in touch.

MB: Thank you.
