Interview: Mary Bledsoe, victim’s mother

Wednesday, January 4, 2006 - 1:37 p.m.

This witness, Mary Bledsoe, was identified as the mother of the deceased.  Detectives S. Murphy and T. Armstrong conducted a follow-up interview with the witness at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff’s Department.  The interview was recorded on a portable, audio tape recorder with the witness’ knowledge and consent.

TA = Ted Armstrong
SM = Sam Murphy
MB = Mary Bledsoe

SM: Thank you for coming in to talk with us again, Ms. Bledsoe.  Please state your name and address for the record.

MB: Okay, my name is Mary Bledsoe and I live at 17 Van Buren St.

SM: Thanks.  We just have a few questions we need to ask for clarification.

MB: Okay, I’ll tell you whatever I can.

SM: First off, last time we talked to you, you stated that you weren’t sure about Amy calling you on the day of the murder.  Do you remember now if she did?

MB: Yes, I do.  I’m sorry, I just couldn’t think straight that day, you know...  Anyway, yes, she called and told me that Kayla was going to pick her up from that interview and she was staying the night with her.  I knew she’d told me and I told you that, I just couldn’t remember that it was the last thing she told me, the last time I talked to her... I apologize.

TA: That’s fine.  I understand that it was a trying time for you.  You said that she stayed with Ms. Pecan often, so you had no reason to think she might have been up to something else?

MB: No, I believed her.  She stayed with Kayla quite often and I knew she was safe.  I might be overprotective sometimes, but I know that when she and Kayla are together, Amy is perfectly fine.

SM: Why didn’t you push Amy for more answers about the interview she was going on with Greg Cassidy?

MB: Well, I guess I tried but I think Amy was starting to feel like an adult and she wasn’t too keen sometimes on me wanting to know everything about her and her life, so I was going to drop it then and ask more later.  Not that I wanted to.  I wanted to know right then, but I didn’t want her to get upset with me over it.  She thought she was ready for the world.  I almost feel like I’m being interrogated...

TA: These are just routine questions, Ma’am.  We need to know everything we can so we can get a lead in this case.

MB: Yes, I understand... this is all just still hard for me... I think I’m still in shock.

SM: We just have a couple more questions.  Did Amy mention any problems at work?

MB: No, not really.  I know she was very proud to be manager and she worked a lot of hours.

TA: About what time did you leave to run errands on that day?

MB: Well, I think it was around 4:30.  Amy was waiting in the garage for her ride.

TA: What time did you return home that day?

MB: I think it was right about 5:30.

TA: Can anyone verify that, Ms. Bledsoe?

MB: Am I a suspect??  You can’t possibly think I had something to do with what happened to my daughter, Detective!

SM: Ma’am, these are just routine questions we ask everyone.

MB: Alright, well I’m sure the checkout woman at the grocery store would remember me.  She sees me quite often.

TA: Okay.  I think that’s all the questions we have for now.  We might need to speak to you again.  Is that going to be a problem?

MB: No, not at all.  I want you to find who is responsible for killing my child.  If it takes the rest of my life, I want to know.  Good day, Detectives.

End interview - 1:52 p.m.
