Witness Interview: Fred Anderson, found body of victim

Monday, December 5, 2005 - 1:30 p.m.

The witness was identified as the hunter who reported finding the body of the victim. He was interviewed in the Sheriff’s Office interrogation room. The interview was recorded on a portable audio tape recorder with the witness’s knowledge and consent.

TA= Detective T. Armstrong
SM= Detective S. Murphy
FA= Fred Anderson

TA: For the record could you please state your name and address?

FA: Fred Elvis Anderson. 1246 Delbridge Ln. #306, Oxford.

SM: You seem pretty calm Fred, for having found a dead body.

FA: I’ve seen lots of dead things before.

SM: This wasn’t some deer you just poached, this was a human being. That doesn’t make you feel anything?

FA: A dead thing is a dead thing, and for the record, I’ve never been found guilty of poaching here. Also, it is deer season now and I have a tag.

TA: So you were out hunting when you found the body?

FA: Yea, I’d just set out to go to my tree stand, and found her all wrapped up.

TA: Did you touch anything?

FA: No, I’ve watched CSI enough to know that you guys get evidence off of that stuff.

SM: Didn’t you wonder if she was still alive? Maybe take the plastic off to feel for a pulse?

FA: I’ve seen enough dead things to know when something is dead. That girl was dead, awful thing to happen to someone so young.

SM: You like young girls don’t you Fred?

FA: Why? Are you jealous Detective?

SM: Why don’t you just answer the question.

FA: Sure, I like younger women.

SM: You like them real young though, don’t you Fred?

FA: I like my women young, but I don’t mess with minors, I learned my lesson. Sometimes a girl will lie about her age but I’m pretty careful who I hang with.

TA: Did you know the victim?

FA: Nope, never saw her before.

TA: Sure she never went to any of the parties you have at your house? Never bought her a beer? Asked her to come over to your place?

FA: Look, I told you I’d never seen her before. Yea, I have parties, but I try to keep the ones under eighteen out.

TA: When you found her body, did you notice anyone around?

FA: I was alone. I didn’t see anyone around there.

SM: What time did you find her?

FA: I started out at 5:30 a.m. and found her soon after that, probably around 5:45 or 6:00 a.m.

SM: Do you carry a knife with you when you go hunting?

FA: Of course, how else am I going to gut a deer? With my teeth?

SM: So let me get this right Fred. You like young girls, you carry a knife, and you were alone. How do we know you didn’t kill her and then call it in like you found the body?

FA: Are you accusing me of killing her? Is that what you're doing?

TA: No one is accusing you of anything Fred, except for maybe some bad personal hygiene.  Detective Murphy was merely asking a question.

FA: Yea, well I’m done with your questions and I’m done with giving you answers. I’ll give you one last statement. Elvis has left the building!
