Forensic Evaluation March 12, 2001

Serology

DNA testing using the DS180 locus (PCR) was employed to assign paternity of Lydia Hammond. The daughter's profile should contain one allele originating from the mother and one from the father. The results from the DS180 test confirm Roger Hammond as the father of Lydia Hammond [Lydia Hammond shares one allele with Melissa Hammond (red arrow) and Roger Hammond (blue arrow). Lydia shares no alleles with Steve Kirby].

Trace Evidence

  1. Handprint on evidence 000524-21 (fitted sheet) has been examined using nondestructive methods (alternate lights sources and iodine fuming). No clear points of distinction could be visualized. Therefore, destructive methods are being investigated to analyze the print. However, prior to analyzing the handprint, tests will be performed on laboratory-generated handprints to optimize conditions.
  2. The contents from the filter bags of three vacuums (A, B and C) at the Farrell Motors car dealership were emptied and examined. From vacuum A, no fingernails were found. From vacuum B, two fingernails were found. From vacuum C, six fingernails were found. Tests are currently underway to compare the fingernails from vacuums B and C with those of the victim's.
