Witness Interview Summaries: Canvass of Neighbors of Cal and Donna Swinney

Detectives Armstrong and Murphy canvassed the neighbors of Cal and Donna Swinney to determine whether anyone saw Donna Swinney in the days just before she reportedly left town on Monday, April 30, 2001 or at any time since then. The interviews summarized below are those relevant to the investigation and are representative of all interviews conducted.

  • Mabel Atcross, 1616 Garfield. Atcross stated she was outside her home getting in her car to attend a church meeting when saw Donna Swinney leave for work just before 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2001. Atcross said D. Swinney got into her silver station wagon, waved to Atcross, and drove off. Atcross stated she did not see D. Swinney return home because Atcross retires before D. Swinney usually gets home.

Atcross stated she saw Donna Swinney drive off the next morning with her son, Matty, about 7:30 a.m. Atcross said she did not see D. Swinney return that day, but saw the station wagon parked in front of the house in the evening. Atcross stated she regularly sees Cal Swinney doing yard work or playing with his son, but she has not seen D. Swinney since that Monday morning. Atcross said she had heard D. Swinney was out of town.
  • Herman Talbert 1615 Garfield. Talbert stated he knows Donna Swinney by sight, but has never talked to her and does not really pay attention to her comings and goings. Talbert said he has spoken in passing to D. Swinney's husband, Cal Swinney, a couple of times, but has never stopped to talk with either of them. Talbert said he has enough to do to keep track of his own family and can't be bothered with the activities of the neighbors.
  • Charlsie Crowe 1617 Garfield. Crowe stated she was working in her yard Monday, April 30, as she does every morning, and saw Donna Swinney go out her front door with a small suitcase, throw the suitcase in the back of her station wagon, and drive off. Crowe said D. Swinney smiled and waved at her as she departed. Crowe remembers the time as around 9:00 a.m. Crowe stated she saw the Swinneys' car later that day parked in front of the house and has seen Cal Swinney and Matt Swinney every day, but hasn't seen D. Swinney since that day.
  • Florence Pulver 1613 Garfield. Pulver stated that she knew Donna Swinney because Swinney's son, Matt, and Pulver's son, Ray, were on the same Little League team. Pulver said she and the Swinneys sometimes helped each other getting the boys to and from their practices and games. Since D. Swinney worked evenings, her husband, Cal Swinney, would go to the weekday games and both would attend the day games on Saturday. Pulver said it seemed strange to her that D. Swinney had not been to any of the games at the end of the season, but that her husband had been there instead. Pulver stated she has not seen D. Swinney since the game on the last Saturday in April. Pulver said she remembers the date specifically because her son, Ray, hit a home run to win the game.
