Serology

All suspect stains were collected and transferred to the Mississippi State Crime Lab. Samples that were positive using the presumptive phenolphthalein test were analyzed initially using ABO blood typing. DNA analysis of samples positive for human blood is currently in progress.

• Several different locations on the head of the instrument and the instrument handle were tested.

Two samples taken from each bloodstain.

• Some samples originate from inside or near a hole (hole #1) in the soil, 12 inches away from the body. Hole #1 is consistent with the tapered end of the pickaxe (Evidence # 001547-09) taken from Zone A.
• All samples were positive for human blood, types as shown.

Fingerprints

Latent fingerprints were developed using a variety of methods including Amido Black, Cyanoacrylate Fuming, DAB (Diaminobenzidine), Ninhydrin, and others. The most appropriate method to develop the latent fingerprints was determined for each item individually, based on the properties of the item. The resulting full and partial fingerprints were then compared with known samples provided by persons associated with the Michaelis investigation. Remaining unidentified fingerprints were searched through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (A.F.I.S.).
