Biography: Katherine Dixon, Donna Swinney's co-worker

Katherine Jacqueline Dixon was born to Valentine Delacroix Dixon and Carl Dean Dixon on March 17, 1978. Though a month premature and weighing just four pounds, twelve ounces at birth, she grew into a healthy, precocious child who was the apple of her daddy's eye. She was a very happy child and managed to endear herself to any and all who met her. Her beautiful, green "cat eyes" earned her the nickname Kat from the time she was three years old.

Kat's bubbly personality belied the difficulties of her early childhood. In 1982, when Kat was just four years old, her mother died from an overdose of pain medication after a long battle with cancer. Kat was shattered by her mother's death and still wears Valentine's wedding ring on a chain around her neck as a memento of the mother she barely remembers. Then when Kat was five years old, she narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt when her father wrestled her away from a man who had lured her from the swings where she was playing. In the process of saving Kat, her father broke the abductor's arm, which most people considered small punishment for what he had tried to do to Kat.

Valentine's death and the attempted kidnaping made Carl an overly protective father, which was especially hard on Kat in her teenage years. When she was in high school, Kat often lamented to her friends that her father would try to intimidate her dates by cleaning his shotgun as he chatted with them while they waited for her. Kat still tells the story today, but presents it as a humorous anecdote from her childhood and not the painful embarrassment it was at the time. Despite any of her past or present complaints, it is plain that she and her father are very close and adore one another.

It is no secret that Kat was devastated by the murder of Devlin Beauchamp in January 2000. Devlin was her father's business partner in the Home Plate restaurant and was a dear friend to both Kat and Carl. Since Devlin's death, Kat has become very active in the management and operation of Home Plate and serves as the General Manager for the restaurant. She has worked very hard to keep Devlin's original concept of Home Plate alive and has managed to do a fine job. She is highly respected and admired by the entire crew as well as the clientele.

She recently graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from the University of Mississippi and has put her talents to good use by organizing, hosting and performing in a weekly revue featuring local talent on Sunday nights at Home Plate. It is very popular with Oxford residents of all ages. She also acts as an assistant director for the Episcopal Children's Drama Troupe, where her most recent credit was a production of "Annie."

Kat presently dating Dayton Chalmers, a drama teacher at Oxford High School in Oxford and remains the third baseman on the Home Plate softball team.
