The Oxford Eagle gossip column, "They Say", ran the following item.

They Say
"They say," that when Will Mathis, Orlando Lester and Whit Owens, who wilfully and deliberately murdered two brave officers, are turned loose on the public again, it will be best to burn down our court house and confess that justice cannot be administered in our courts. We may as well admit that we are semi-barbarian, and will submit to hoodlum rule without a protest.
