Press: Public Execution

Oxford Eagle, February 6, 1902

THE EXECUTION TO BE PUBLIC
The Board of Supervisors were in session the first of the week, but adjourned after two days work as there was little business to be transacted. An unpleasant duty before this body was to select a place for the erection of a gallows for the hanging of Whit Owens, Will Mathis and Orlando Lester. A petition from the faculty of the University, President Malone and a number of citizens of the town was presented, requesting that the hanging be private.

After the petition was presented District Attorney Roane came before the Board and insisted that the trend of public sentiment demanded a public execution. The gallows will be erected about one mile south east of town on the Thompson farm, near the lake. It is believed that fully 10,000 people will be here that day.
