Press: Short News Items

Oxford Eagle, January .23, 1902

The Oxford Eagle featured the following news briefs.

Joe Stripling and son, Will Stripling, were arrested 11 miles south east of Oxford Saturday by Secret Service Agent McAdams and Deputy U. S. Marshal Hal H. Hamey, for making and passing counterfeit money. Will Mathis was a former partner of the Striplings and told where they had buried $20.00. The bogus money was found, and the Striplings tried on Tuesday before United Stated Commissioner Adams, and in default of bond were bound over to the Federal Court.

-----------------------------------------

Upon hearing his sentence to be hung on Friday, February 14th Will Mathis requested Judge P. M. Lowery to fix the time for his hanging at a different hour from that of the negro, Orlando Lester, his partner in crime. Mathis stated that his reason for making this request was that he did not believe in social equality with negroes. Judge Lowrey refused to grant the request, but as the affair on Feb. 14th is not to be a social function Mr. Mathis will doubtless be excusable for temporary equality with the negro. Since his reputation is not unblemished, the slight smear upon his social status will be hardly noticed.
