Anthony Marcus Phelps was born September 28, 1975 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to James and Marianne Phelps. His father, James A. Phelps, is General Manager for the KwikiMart convenience stores, Southern Division and still resides in Baton Rouge. His Mother, Marianne Phelps Gordon deceased in January 1988 is interred at the Roselawn Memorial Park, Baton Rouge.
As a child, Tony Phelps life was traumatic. His mother and father divorced in 1981 when Tony was five years old. Marianne remarried Peter Gordon with whom she had been having an affair for several years. Peter Gordon was then Vice President of the First State Bank of Baton Rouge, and Marianne was the bank manager.
Tony and his older brother, James A. Phelps, Jr., Jim, both lived with their father after the divorce. Although they spent some time with their mother and stepfather, their mother's increasing mental health problems prevented a normal relationship. Their mother suffered a complete breakdown when Tony was 10 and he did not see his mother again until her funeral in January of 1988. Marianne Phelps Gordon committed suicide when Tony was 12.
Tony was held back in the first grade due to "acting out" disturbances in the classroom. It was determined that he would benefit from counseling. His teachers deemed him very intelligent, but unable to apply it. His behavior improved somewhat and his father discontinued counseling after one year. At age 10, Tony began to withdraw. Later, it was determined that his parents' divorce, his inability to form an attachment with his stepfather, and a perceived favoritism by his father for James, Jr. all contributed to his withdrawal.
Tony continued through high school, earning only the minimum grades to go on to college. He had few friends and no close associations with girls. He skipped one year between high school and college, working in one of his father's convenience stores in Baton Rouge. The store was robbed three times while he worked solitary shifts, there were no witnesses, no demonstrable injuries, and no solid suspects. While surveillance video did not clearly implicate Tony, his father fired him after the third robbery.
His father contacted Richard Owens, the Dean of Students at Ole Miss, an old college friend for assistance in Tony's application to the school. Tony was admitted in the fall of 1995. He has been a lackluster student maintaining only a C average. After two years, he does not have enough credits to move to Junior status for the fall 1997 semester and is taking an extra credit load to meet the requirements for the spring 1998 semester. Tony has worked as a Resident Activities Coordinator since the spring of 1996. His interests include electronics, computers, film production, and the Confederacy. He is considered by some to be somewhat of an expert in Civil War history and his personal hero is Ken Burns (PBS Civil war award winning documentary).
Tony has established a good relationship with his older brother, Jim. Jim graduated magna cum laude from Stanford University with a BA in Business Administration, passing the CPA exam in June of 1997. Jim is very successfully employed in San Francisco, with a big 8 accounting firm. He has been helping Tony with some financial support.
