Second Interview: Bree Anna Paxton, friend of victim

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 - 9:45 AM

The witness was identified as a friend of the victim, Blake Jenson. Detectives Murphy and Armstrong interviewed her at the Yoknapatawpha Sheriffs Department and recorded the interview on a portable tape recorder with the witness's knowledge and consent.

Detective Ted Armstron
Detective Sam Murphy
Bree Anna Paxton

Detective Murphy: Thank you for returning to talk with us. Could you state your name and address again for the record?

Bree Paxton: No problem. My name is Bree Paxton and I live at 239 Colonial Road.

Detective Murphy: I am pleased that you decided to come in. You seemed hesitant at first.

Bree Paxton: Well, do you blame me? The last time I was here you accused me of putting arsenic in the breadsticks I made for Blake.

Detective Armstrong: We never specified any ingredients. Since you mentioned them, we have a question about those breadsticks.

Bree Paxton: Oh gawd, here we go again. I did NOT poison Blake, I swear!

Detective Armstrong: Calm down. Listen. We have a witness who told us that when the lights came back on Blake was on the floor and the breadstick was right there on the floor with him.

Bree Paxton: And…your point is…?

Detective Murphy: There was no breadstick on the floor when we arrived. Would you happen to know why?

Bree Paxton: Actually, I do. I am ashamed to admit that when I saw Blake lying on the floor I became fixated on that stupid breadstick. Somebody, I think it was Jennifer Adams, was walking by and accidentally kicked it and I watched it roll over and over across the floor until it disappeared under the couch. Can you believe that Blake was lying there dying and I was watching a stupid breadstick?

Detective Murphy: That room was a crime scene, we searched over and under every inch of it; there was no bread stick under that couch, Bree.

Bree Paxton: WHAT is the big deal about that freakin' breadstick? Good grief, I went over and got it and threw it away.

Detective Murphy: We also check the wastebaskets.

Bree Paxton: I didn't throw it out then. I stuffed it in my pocket. And then, when I was home, I reached into my pocket and remembered what I'd done. That's when I threw it out.

Detective Murphy: Would that still be in the trash at 239 Colonial Road?

Bree Paxton: Not after all this time. Why?

Detective Armstrong: Let's discuss this "crush" you had on Blake Jenson.

Bree Paxton: Whatever.

Detective Armstrong: You said that Jamey suspected that you and Blake "had a thing going." Did he come into the gaming room that night?

Bree Paxton: Gosh, I don't think so. I didn’t see him if he did. He would have overreacted if he'd seen Blake singing that song to me though.

Detective Armstrong: Overreacted how?

Bree Paxton: He would just think it backed up his theory about us. If he did come to the room he never mentioned it to me. He was working, so I'm pretty sure he left when everyone had their food.

Detective Murphy: About that song he was singing to you that night. Did you two have some sort of secret fling going on?

Bree Paxton: He kissed me once. Well, maybe I kissed him. Anyway, he told me he was in love with Madison and he wasn't like that. But I had hope because he didn't push me away. He kissed me back for a second or two. Then he just kinda started teasing me all the time, that song being a good example. I didn't mind, I liked it really.

Detective Armstrong: You told us that Stix was there when the lights went out. Do you recall what he was doing or what he said before the lights went out?

Bree Paxton: Yeah, I went home and tried to go back over the events and I remembered Stix was pretty pissed. He told Blake to quit acting like such a fool and to quit stalling. He said something like, "Clinging to that title for a few more seconds?"

Detective Armstrong: Did Blake respond?

Bree Paxton: He laughed and bent over and picked up his controller, he turned and winked at me and then the lights went out.

Detective Murphy: What do you remember about after the lights came on?

Bree Paxton: That stupid breadstick! I’m sorry, I feel so useless.

Detective Murphy: You have given us some useful information, thanks again for your time.

Bree Paxton: Did I clear myself then?

Detective Armstrong: You can go now. We're done here.

Bree Paxton: Umm, ok. Bye.
