Interview: Carl Fine, victim's brother

Friday, August 22, 2003 - 5:20 p.m.

Carl Fine, who was identified as the half-brother of the victim, was interviewed at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department. The interview was conducted by Detectives Armstrong and Murphy and was recorded on a portable tape recorder with the witness's knowledge and consent.

TA = Detective T. Armstrong
SM = Detective S. Murphy
CF = Carl Fine

SM: Thanks for talking to us again, Carl.

CF: Sure thing. Y'all made any headway on this thing?

TA: We're trying.

SM: I know this seems repetitive, but for the record, could you please state your name and address.

CF: My name is Carl Fine. I live at 108 Warren Street.

SM: We'd like to talk to you a little bit about some information that we've discovered in the investigation.

CF: Okay. Shoot.

SM: We found Andy's watch.

CF: Oh yeah? Where did it turn up?

TA: Eddie Dooley had it.

CF: I'll be damned. Although I can't say that surprises me. Little pickpocket. He'd take anything.

SM: Do you think that Eddie could have had anything to do with Andy's death.

CF: No. He's a liar and a thief. But he doesn't have the guts to put his head up enough to murder someone. He likes to stay under everyone's radar.

TA: You seem pretty sure of that.

CF: I suppose I am.

SM: You're pretty calm about that too. Guy steals your brother's watch... you seem pretty laid back.

CF: I guess I am laid back about it. Maybe Eddie Dooley would surprise me and turn out to be a cold-blooded killer, but I doubt it. He's a bug. An insect. He's not even worth squashing. So no, I'm not going to get upset about him stealing my brother's watch when the murderer is still out there.

TA: Okay, let's talk about something else.

SM: Have you seen your sister-in-law since your brother's death?

CF: Cindy? Of course. There was the funeral and all the other arrangements that had to be made.

TA: Arrangements? Is that all?

CF: What do you mean?

SM: Carl, we don't want to be disrespectful here. But people have reported seeing you at Cindy Fine's apartment several times since your brother's death. Some have said it was pretty late at night when you visited.

CF: So?

TA: You and Cindy were an item back in the day, right? I mean, she dumped you and then took up with your brother.

CF: Oh, just stop it! That's ridiculous. Don't even go there.

TA: I've seen people kill for less than that.

CF: That's bulls---! I had nothing to do with my brother's murder. I should... I should... I don't know. Sue you for even saying such a thing!

SM: What were you doing over at Cindy's, Carl?

CF: I went by there to talk about the funeral and burial arrangements. I've been there a couple of times to talk about settling up his estate. Such as it is. And then I've been by there a couple of times just to check on her. Is that okay? Can I make sure that my sister-in-law is doing okay after her husband's been murdered?

SM: Look, we had to ask the question--

CF: No! You look. My brother is dead. Her husband is dead. He might have been an a------ to many people in this town. But he was still our kin! And we shouldn't have to feel bad about helping each other through this.

TA: Calm down--

CF: Screw that! Don't tell me to calm down. Have you ever had a family member murdered? Then don't talk to me about this stuff. Is there an official reason I have to be here?

SM: Not really. We haven't charged you with anything. We just want your help--

CF: Then you can forget it. This discussion is over. I'm not sitting here listening to this crap.

End interview - 5:33 p.m.
