REPORTING OFFICER'S NARRATIVE (Brief narrative of the facts surrounding the offense and the arrest.)

At 8:00 a.m., Detectives Armstrong and Murphy arrived at 1590 Jackson Avenue to serve an arrest warrant on Arthur Beck of that address. The detectives were accompanied by Unit #304 (Deputy Fred Willits) and Unit #224 (Officer Steve Harding) as backup.

Environmental conditions at scene upon arrival are as follows: Weather: Clear; Ambient Exterior Temperature: 48º F / 9º C; Relative Exterior Humidity: 71%; Ambient Interior Temperature: 68º F / 20º C; Relative Interior Humidity: 55%.

At 8:00 a.m., R/Is Armstrong and Murphy knocked on the front door of the residence and announced themselves. Receiving no response, the R/Is then gained entry to the residence with the assistance of R/Os Willits and Harding.

Once inside the residence, the R/Is again announced themselves and received no response. The R/Is and R/Os conducted a room-by-room search of the residence. In the master bedroom located on the second floor in the southwest corner of the residence, R/Os discovered the apparently lifeless body of an adult male approximately 60 years of age and alerted R/Is. Visual observation of the body and a brief tactile check of the carotid pulse supported the assessment that the adult male was deceased. At R/I Armstrong's request, R/O Willits contacted Dispatch to request that a Coroner's Inspector and a Crime Scene Unit be dispatched to the location. Dispatch indicated the ETA for both was approximately 20 minutes. R/Os and R/Is then completed the search of the remainder of the residence and found it clear of any other persons, living or deceased.

Following the search of the interior of the residence, R/Os conducted a preliminary inspection of the exterior of the residence while R/Is returned to the master bedroom for further inspection of the body observed in that location. R/Os reported to R/Is that no signs of forced entry on the front or rear doors or on any of the ground floor windows were found.

In the master bedroom, the body was in an upholstered armchair in the southwest corner of the room. Adjacent to the chair was a side table with two objects on it: a lamp, which was unlit; and a bound diary/journal-style book with numerous handwritten entries. R/Is took the journal into evidence and assigned Evidence # 003095-01.

R/Is tentatively identified the deceased as Arthur Beck, the sole resident at the incident address. Visual observation indicated the deceased was wearing a light blue long-sleeved Oxford-style shirt, a white t-shirt, navy blue trousers, navy blue socks and brown shoes. The body was seated in the armchair with the arms extended at the sides of the chair. A 38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver was observed on the floor on the south side of the chair, near the right hand of the deceased. A framed photograph of an adult female in her early 50s was observed on the north side of the chair, partially clasped in the left hand of the deceased. The body and chair faced in an easterly direction. Visual inspection revealed significant trauma to the back of the head and extensive blood and tissue spatter on the wall behind the chair.

Coroner's Inspector Luwinda Johnson arrived at the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m. and joined R/Is at the body's location. Inspector Johnson pronounced the victim deceased at 8:37 a.m. by visual observation that the victim was not breathing and by tactile observation that the victim did not have a palpable carotid pulse. Inspector Johnson noted that moderate rigor mortis was evident, fixed lividity was present, and the corneas were cloudy. While she withheld an official estimate pending an autopsy, Inspector Johnson speculated the victim had been dead approximately 8 to 10 hours and the apparent cause of death was a gunshot wound through the mouth, which initial indications suggested was self-inflicted. Inspector Johnson indicated that further details would be available in the official autopsy report.

CSU arrived at the scene at approximately 8:35 a.m. and began processing the scene after Inspector Johnson completed her initial inspection of the body. Inspector Johnson stayed with the CSU team to ensure integrity of the body until it could be removed from the scene without destroying other evidence. R/Is notified the CSU team that, to the best of their knowledge, the following personnel have had occasion to enter the crime scene area and must be excluded by CSU personnel: R/O Harding, R/O Willits, Coroner's Inspector Johnson, R/I Armstrong, and R/I Murphy.

Following preliminary inspection of the scene, R/Is received a verbal report from R/Os Willits and Harding on their preliminary canvass of residents in the immediate vicinity of the incident address. R/Os stated, in summary and not verbatim, that neighbors had not noticed anything unusual at the incident address. Two neighbors ‒ Linda Alden and George Kim ‒ reported seeing the deceased, Arthur Beck, working in his yard on the afternoon of Friday, November 18, 2011, but had not seen him since that time. Neighbor Jeremy Gladwell reported hearing what he thought was a car backfiring sometime Friday night, possibly around 11:00 p.m. or midnight, but he could not be sure of the time.

R/Is left the scene at 11:45 a.m. Before leaving, R/I Armstrong instructed CSU to seal the scene upon completion or end of day suspension of processing. CSU to notify R/Is of progress by the end of this date. As of this filing, CSU is still actively processing at the scene.

Body of the deceased remanded into the custody of Coroner's Inspector Luwinda Johnson. Deceased was removed from scene at 10:01 a.m. and transported to the coroner's office for autopsy.

Evidence remanded into the custody of Forensics Officer T. R. Douglas for transport to the state crime lab for routine analysis.
