Summary Interview: Dale King's neighbors

On Friday evening, March 15, 2002, and Saturday afternoon, March 16, 2002, Deputy P.J. Watson and Officer Maria Richards canvassed Dale King's neighborhood on South Lamar Boulevard in Oxford. The neighbors were questioned about whether they had seen Mr. King during the time of the murder - the night of January 13, 2002, or the early morning hours of January 14, 2002. The interviews summarized are the most relevant to the investigation.

With the exception of the following, all neighbors stated they had retired before 11:00 p.m. on the night in question:

  • Florence Nesbitt of 2154 S. Lamar, the next-door neighbor of Mr. King, stated she heard Mr. King's car enter his driveway at around 12:20 a.m.  She was preparing for bed and heard the car drive in.  She recognized his car because it makes a distinctive noise that had become familiar to her. She pulled aside her drapes and looked out long enough to see Mr. King exit his vehicle and enter the house.  She did not hear him leave during the time she finished her preparation for retiring.  She says she finally got into bed at 12:40 a.m. and remembers the time because she set the alarm for the next morning.  She looked out the window again just before she got into bed; saw his car was there and that he appeared to be moving around inside the house.

  • Jason Hurlback of 2159 S. Lamar and his wife were returning from a day in Memphis when they saw Mr. King's car turn in his driveway at the same time they were pulling into their driveway across the street.  Mr. Hurlback estimates the time as about 12:20 a.m. because he and his wife were discussing what good time they had made from Memphis. The trip usually takes about 90 minutes and they had made it just under that time even with a rest stop.  Just before he went to bed Mr. Hurlback opened the front door to let his cat in and noticed Mr. King's lights were on in the house, and Mr. King could been seen through the window talking on the phone. This was about 12:45 a.m.
