Matt had a happy childhood and made lots of friends during his grade school years. He was a good student and had lots of friends. His friends teased him and called him "Doctor Doolittle" because he was always concerned about wounded animals. He had a dog and cat of his own and he practiced putting bandages on them. His goal was to become a doctor.
Things changed during his high school years at Lafayette High School. During the beginning of his senior year his father, Monty died of a sudden heart attack. It devastated both Matt and his mother. Monty left his family well taken care of but both Matt and Laura's lives changed that day. Things would never be the same.
Laura encouraged Matt to continue his dream of becoming a doctor. Matt graduated Lafayette High in 2003 and was accepted at the University of Mississippi. His heart wasn't in it so instead of pursuing his dream of becoming a doctor he opted for a career in nursing. He began his pre-requisite classes in the fall of 2003. He began to party with his friends and his grades suffered. He started taking trips to the casinos in Biloxi and loved to play the slots. In 2004 Matt decided he'd had enough of school and he dropped out. Since all he seemed to do was lie around the house, his mother gave him an ultimatum: either go back to school or find a job.
Matt applied for a job at the Gathright Reed Medical Supply Company and was hired to deliver oxygen to nursing homes in the area.
