Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department deputies were called to 1301 Belk Boulevard, Yoknapatawpha Acres Nursing Home, to investigate the death of Jerry Dean Shaw (31), who was an orderly at the home.
Officials say the deputies responded to a 911 call from Bonnie Atkins at approximately 4:11 pm. Atkins informed the department that she was a registered nurse and that she was unable to resuscitate her co-worker.
Atkins met the officers at the front door of the nursing home and led them through the building and out the back entrance to where she discovered the body. "At first I thought he was just being a jerk and trying to scare me but after he didn’t make any movements I went over and checked. He had no pulse, he was dead right there on the ground," stated Atkins.
Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Elizabeth Jones said that it appeared that Shaw had slipped on some garbage. An autopsy will be completed to determine the cause of death. Since this could be a case of negligence by the nursing home, the Health Department has been informed.
