The Killer's Confession

Tuesday, September 11, 2012 - 11:00 a.m.

Justin Landry was Courtney Morris's boyfriend. Detectives Murphy and Parker interviewed him a second time at the Yoknapatawpha County Sheriff's Department. The interview was recorded with the witness's knowledge and consent.

Participants:

  • Detective S., Murphy
  • Detective E. Parker
  • Justin Landry

Detective Parker: Thank you for coming in to talk to us again, Mr. Landry. Before we get started, would you just state your name and address for the record please.

Justin Landry: Justin Landry. 234 Eagle Springs Road. Do you know who killed Courtney yet?

Detective Parker: Just one more thing before we go into anything. It's just routine, but we have things we have to do. You understand?

Justin Landry: Yeah.

Detective Parker: You understand that you have the right to remain silent and not talk to us, right?

Justin Landry: Are you arresting me?

Detective Parker: No. We just have to make sure you know your rights or our bosses get mad.

Justin Landry: OK.

Detective Parker: So you understand you don't have to talk to us?

Justin Landry: Yeah. So does that mean I can go?

Detective Murphy: Why don't you wait until you hear what we want to talk about?

Justin Landry: Yeah, OK.

Detective Parker: You also have the right to have an attorney present while you're talking to us, and if you can't afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand that?

Justin Landry: Yeah.

Detective Parker And do you want to keep talking to us now without an attorney present?

Justin Landry: I guess. Yeah, OK.

Detective Parker: Great. Good game on Saturday.

Justin Landry: It's always good when we win.

Detective Parker: I was working, so I didn't get to watch the game. Did you get to play much?

Justin Landry: Some. Is that why you called me in here? To talk about football? Because I can't tell you anything about that, except what you read in the papers.

Detective Murphy: Actually, we've got a few questions that we want to clear up with you, but they aren't about football

Justin Landry: Yeah, OK.

Detective Murphy: Tell us again what happened when you went to see Courtney that Sunday.

Justin Landry: I went to see if she was feeling better.

Detective Murphy: Was she?

Justin Landry: Some.

Detective Parker: What did she say was wrong with her?

Justin Landry: What do you mean?

Detective Parker: You said she told you she wasn't feeling well, but you didn't tell us what was wrong with her.

Justin Landry: She just said she didn't feel well. I don't know.

Detective Parker: You didn't ask?

Justin Landry: No.

Detective Murphy: So when you got there, how was she feeling?

Justin Landry: Better.

Detective Murphy: Did she tell you what she did Saturday night?

Justin Landry: She stayed home. She was sick. I already told you that.

Detective Murphy: And that's what she told you on Sunday?

Justin Landry: Yeah, I guess.

Detective Murphy: You don't know?

Justin Landry: I don't remember talking about that exactly, but if we did, that's what she said.

Detective Parker: Did you believe her?

Justin Landry: What do you mean?

Detective Parker: She said she stayed home. Did you believe her?

Justin Landry: Yeah, I guess.

Detective Murphy: So what did you do while you were at Courtney's that day?

Justin Landry: I don't know. Hung out.

Detective Murphy: Did you talk?

Justin Landry: Yeah, I guess.

Detective Murphy: What did you talk about?

Justin Landry: I don't remember.

Detective Parker: Did you talk about the roses?

Justin Landry: I told you before I don't know about any roses.

Detective Parker: We know that's not true, Justin. Your fingerprints are on the box. What did Courtney say about the roses?

Justin Landry: I don't know.

Detective Parker: Did she tell you where she got the roses?

Justin Landry: I don't know.

Detective Murphy: Justin, look at me. We know who gave Courtney the roses. Did she tell you?

Justin Landry: I don't know.

Detective Murphy: Did Courtney tell you she was seeing someone else?

Justin Landry: It didn't mean anything. She loved me.

Detective Parker: Is that what she told you?

Justin Landry: Are you trying to say she didn't? Because that's not true. That other guy was just… helping her out.

Detective Parker: So your girlfriend was sleeping with another guy for money?

Justin Landry: You take that back! That's not what it was at all.

Detective Parker: We know there was another man in her life, Justin. When did you find out about him?

Justin Landry: You just don't understand the situation.

Detective Parker: Explain it to us.

Justin Landry: He was nothing. He just helped her out sometimes.

Detective Parker: When did she tell you that?

Justin Landry: Courtney loved me.

Detective Murphy: Justin, what did you and Courtney talk about that day?

Justin Landry: I don't know.

Detective Murphy: Is that when she told you she was pregnant?

Justin Landry: I don't know what you mean.

Detective Murphy: We know she was pregnant. That's a fact. Did she tell you?

Justin Landry: I don't know.

Detective Murphy: Did she tell you that day?

Justin Landry: So what if she did?

Detective Murphy: Did she tell you it was your baby?

Justin Landry: That couldn't be true. We were always careful. It wasn't possible.

Detective Parker: So it was the other guy's? The one with the money?

Justin Landry: It had to be.

Detective Parker: Why didn't you tell us about all this when we talked to you before?

Justin Landry: Because it wasn't real.

Detective Parker: What did you tell her when she said you were going to be a father?

Justin Landry: Why would she say something like that when it couldn't be true?

Detective Murphy: Justin, have you ever seen this guy who was helping Courtney out?

Justin Landry: He was just some old guy.

Detective Parker: I've seen him, and I don't care how old he is. He's really good-looking. I can understand what Courtney saw in him.

Justin Landry: What are you trying to say?

Detective Parker: I'm just saying he's good-looking. He has money. It's easy to see why Courtney would be attracted to him.

Justin Landry: Stop saying that. She was mine. We loved each other. He didn't mean anything to her.

Detective Parker: But she was sleeping with him.

Justin Landry: That's what you say.

Detective Parker: Well, she was pregnant, and you say it couldn't have been yours. So how do you explain that?

Justin Landry: Shut up! You don't know what you're talking about.

Detective Murphy: Justin, sit back down. There's more to this story. Don't you want to know what else we know?

Justin Landry: Why would I?

Detective Murphy: You might find it interesting.

Justin Landry: Fine. What?

Detective Murphy: Sit down first. Just take a deep breath, and try to calm down.

Justin Landry: How can I calm down? This is all just… I don't even know.

Detective Murphy: Justin, sit. Give me your hand, and listen to me. You're right. This man didn't mean anything to Courtney. He wasn't the father of her baby.

Justin Landry: You don't know that.

Detective Murphy: Yes, we do. It was your baby, Justin. You were the father.

Justin Landry: No. No, no. That's not right.

Detective Murphy: It's true. This other man, he had a vasectomy a long time ago. It couldn't have been his baby.

Justin Landry: No, no, no. No!

Detective Murphy: You were hurt when you found out Courtney was spending time with this other man, weren't you, Justin? You loved her, and she betrayed you.

Justin Landry: She shouldn't have done that.

Detective Murphy: You loved her, and you thought she loved you.

Justin Landry: She did love me!

Detective Murphy: Of course she did. Isn't that what she told you?

Justin Landry: That's what she said, but how could she love me and do that? With him?

Detective Murphy: What did she do with him, Justin?

Justin Landry: She slept with him! She was supposed to be sick, and she slept with him. She blew me off so she could spend the night with him. Then she stands there, smelling like sex and sweat, trying to tell me she's having my baby? And I'm supposed to believe that?

Detective Murphy: No man could be expected to believe something like that. You had to let her know that wasn't OK, didn't you?

Justin Landry: Damn straight, it wasn't OK. She thought she could lie to me over and over, and I'd just keep believing her? I'm not stupid, you know.

Detective Murphy: No, I know you're not. So what did you do?

Justin Landry: I let her know she couldn't get away with that.

Detective Murphy: You didn't have a choice.

Justin Landry: She couldn't do something like that to me. I'm not going to play Daddy to some kid who isn't even mine.

Detective Parker: But it was yours.

Justin Landry: Now you're going to lie to me too?

Detective Murphy: Justin, look at me. What did you do when Courtney told you she was pregnant and it was yours?

Justin Landry: I didn't mean to. I swear I didn't mean to. I love her. I would never hurt her.

Detective Murphy: I understand, but you have to tell us. What did you do?

Justin Landry: She just kept looking at me with that face, trying to tell me she loved me and we could be a family. How could she say that? She wouldn't stop saying that.

Detective Murphy: Did you get her to stop saying that?

Justin Landry: I had to! She wouldn't stop.

Detective Murphy: Is that when you hit her? I understand, if you did. Anyone in your situation would have.

Justin Landry: She wouldn't stop saying that. I had to.

Detective Murphy: You hit her in the face, right? Then what happened?

Justin Landry: She didn't say that anymore.

Detective Murphy: And then what happened?

Justin Landry: I don't want to talk about it.

Detective Murphy: It's OK. You can tell me, Justin. What happened?

Justin Landry: I don't want to talk about it.

Detective Murphy. All right. We can talk about that later. But can you tell me this? What did Courtney say when you left?

Justin Landry: She wasn't really talking then.

Detective Murphy: Give me your other hand, Justin. Good. Now look at me. Was Courtney dead when you left her apartment?

Justin Landry: I don't know.

Detective Murphy: Don't start that again, Justin. You do know. Talk to me. Was she dead when you left?

Justin Landry: Yes.

Detective Murphy: Do you know how she got that way?

Justin Landry: Yes.

Detective Murphy: Did you have anything to do with how she got that way?

Justin Landry: Yes.

Detective Murphy: Tell me how that happened.

Justin Landry: I can't.

Detective Murphy: Yes, you can.

Justin Landry: No. I don't want to talk about this anymore.

Detective Murphy: Justin, we've come this far. Don't you want to just get it all off your chest and be done with it?

Justin Landry: No, I don't want to talk about this anymore. Courtney loved me and I loved her. That's all that matters.

Detective Murphy: I've been doing this a long time, Justin, and I can tell you. People will want to hear the rest. What happened to Courtney after you let her know she couldn't lie to you?

Justin Landry: I don't want to talk about it. You already know anyways. Why do you keep asking me?

Detective Murphy: Because you haven't really told us yet.

Justin Landry: I want to go. Can I go now?

Detective Murphy: I'm afraid not, Justin.

Justin Landry: What do you mean?

Detective Parker: Justin Landry, you are under arrest for the murder of Courtney Morris.
