do you have any possible theories as to why "pig" the cat was highly agitated upon discovery beyond the crime scene trauma/ licking valerie's body?

Wed Jan 29 17:30:45 1997

What has been discovered about the man Valerie was seen with at the bar the night of her death. He was reportedly from Chicago. The marijuana found in her apartment was traced back to Chicago. Has he been found?

Tue Jan 28 18:09:32 1997

Lisa Wood does not seem overly upset about the whole thing, in her communique via postcard to Jenn Breedlove - almost mocking in fact. She deserves closer inspection. Perhaps the two girls are "in cohoots" so to speak. Anything to support this?

Tue Jan 28 18:06:46 1997

Who was/is Purity's boyfriend? Is it Laine Watkins? It appears that whoever he was, he wanted her to have the baby, as evidenced by the paid-for-by-cash ultrasound. When Valerie talked her into the abortion, he became furious and killed Valerie (stabbing her abdomen for symbolism). Laine Watkins is the key to the entire investigation, right?

Tue Jan 28 18:00:59 1997

Was Valerie having an affair with Will Giblini? It appears possible, from the photo of him with painted face on the fridge, and the clown make-up books in her apt. The blood spattering on the photo appears intentional...perhaps Greg found out and killed them both, then Purity killed Greg for retribution?

Tue Jan 28 10:05:59 1997

I don't think Greg Giblini was the person at the bar with Valerie the night she was murdered. Valerie was 5'5" and the man with her was described as quite a bit taller. There is no physical description of Tom Giblini. But Will Giblini is 5'11" I think, so maybe it was him. What are the chances of Greg being William's illegitimate son, adopted by his (Will's)parents? That might explain Greg's anger with Will. And how old is Tom Giblini? How about Joey S., what is his physical description?

Mon Jan 27 10:04:41 1997

On Jan. 26, somebody asked about the reference to Judith in Purity's fax, :" Is that some biblical thing or what?" or words to that effect.
Judith was the Hebrew woman who slew Holofernes, who was waging war on her people, in the Bible story. Her name in fact means, "woman of Judah," or "Jewish woman," and is a quite generic name.
Anyway, Judith deliberately enticed Holofernes; and, after intercourse with him, cut off his head while he was sleeping. She was no shrinking violet, that girl!
Now, just what does this have to do with Purity? Maybe the abortion was all a sham? Maybe the Knight family was trying to trap the Wayward and Unwanted Daughter (Valerie) into committing some sin heinous enough to be killed for? I for one couldn't make out any fetus in the sonogram of a purportedly pregnant Purity (how 'bout that alliteration?) but then I'm not an imaging technician. We can expect either Jake the boy-friend or Daddy Dearest's head to be cut off?

The current situation is pregnant (forgive me!) with possibilities!

Response: Thank you for the information. More information regarding Purity Knight will be posted this week.

Mon Jan 27 06:08:10 1997

It's amusing that someone "knew" Giblini in Santa Rosa. One assumes this was not biblical knowledge, but mere acquaintance.

Something has been puzzling me from the beginning: if Valerie was mutilated after death, then why did the blood from the stab wounds not pool directly beneath her, but instead, spread out over the floor to her left? Unless of course, the kitchen floor were sloping down that way. I think in your next mystery, you might want to pay more attention to these forensic details, unless you intended the blood flow to be some sort of clue that the story is fiction. Also: I knew the photo was a fake when Greg Giblini was allegedly trying to write something (dying people do NOT write in their own blood) and there was no evidence of blueness in the downward pointing hand, which would have shown up darkly in the black-and-white photo-- obviously a healthy human with his heart pumping blood, and not a corpse!

But still, a good job. Did you mean these forensic lapses to be clues? Or not?

We are waiting excitedly for Purity's revelations...

Where were you when the person was killed

Sun Jan 26 08:21:38 1997

the coroner's report saays that there was no evidence of pregnancy or sexual illness. Then what was causing Valerie's severe cramps? Were the medical records from the infirmary looked at? From the beginning to end of her diary there is no mention of her having her period, but lots of mentions of cramps. Could she have been pregnant? or maybe she was being poisoned.
And it was pretty coincidental how Valerie would talk about a guy in the diary and Greg would show up, out of nowhere. Maybe HE was monitoring her computer, although she never mentions having a modem until the end. Maybe she was unaware, but that seems hard to believe since reference is made to her being able to write computer code. I can use a modem but have no idea about code.

Response: According to the victim's former roommate, the cramps mentioned in the diary were menstrual cramps.

Sun Jan 26 07:43:49 1997

I was reading Valerie's Diary and I came across a couple of things, It says that Greg was messing around with computer code, then later it says that he's working on a computer code related to video. When Greg was murdered were there any disks or video or computer equipment in the apartment? What about where he was living in Nashville was that ever searched? or Louise his boss in Nashville was she interviewed? where were the videos Greg made of Valerie, she makes reference to them and how she "just talked" on them. Where are they? I also noticed a pattern of numbers (120,122,115 etc.) after the dates, but not every date,in Diary 1. When she started Diary 2 file the numbers aren't there. Could that be a code of some sort? Were there any other files besides text on the disks?

Response: Computer cables, but no disks or other equipment, were in the apartment. The police report for Greg Giblini's murder will be posted shortly.

Giblini's parents were very cooperative. They requested that most materials found in their home, including the contents of videotapes and computer disks, not be released to the public.

Louise has not been interviewed.

The numbers refer to the victim's weight. We have not recovered any other files from the hard drive.

Sun Jan 26 02:52:35 1997

I'm confused about the sexual activity issue. Would the bath the murderer gave the corpse have been sufficient to wash away any traces (thus, it is actually impossible to know for sure whether or not sexual activity took place), or would it have been insufficient for this purpose (thus, it is known for sure that sexual activity DID NOT take place, because the coroner definitely would have found some sign of it despite the bath)? I can't make heads or tails of the discussions revolving around this issue, so can't decide whether to assume the condom was used for some purpose other than sex.

Response: No physical evidence of sexual activity was found. Bathing the victim would have removed any semen, hair, or skin particles belonging to the perpetrator. Trace amounts of hair and skin found in the drains match the victim.

Sat Jan 25 22:03:19 1997

"WAIT UNTIL DARK" WAS A MOVIE STARRING AUDREY HEPBURN AS
A BLIND WOMAN WHO WAS TERRORIZED BECAUSE SOMEONE LEFT HERION IN HER APARTMENT.

Sat Jan 25 09:09:44 1997

I spent some time in the bay area last spring, including Santa Rosa. I knew Giblini. E-mail me if you want to know some things. Don't wait too long.....

Response: We're very interested. Please contact us immediately at [email protected].

Fri Jan 24 20:19:28 1997

Are the two brothers DNA Types simaliar

Response: Initial testing showed that the DNA makeup of the blood found on the cat resembled, but did not match, Greg Giblini's. The blood was later positively matched with Will Giblini.

Fri Jan 24 01:52:50 1997

One of Purity's faxes to Val says that Judith killed her oppressors. Is she referring to her own mother, or is it some biblical thing? What's up with that?

Response: Judith appeared in the Bible. Please consult the response above for details.

Fri Jan 24 01:06:01 1997

I think the window had been broken when she moved into the apartment. The overalls are mentioned in Joey's answering machine message, some kind of prop for the scene they were supposed to rehearse the night before Val's murder. Does anyone see any significance? And does anyone have any insights into the plays all these people were involved in? "Wait Until Dark," "Dirty Work," "The History of Accidental Death," the names are so intriguing! I know one of the Det.s said there seemed to be no connection with Will's role in Wait Until Dark" but it would be interesting to know a little about the plots. Anyone who knows anything should post a few notes. Thanks.

Response: Nothing was found in the overall pockets. They are currently considered insignificant.

Fri Jan 24 00:17:12 1997

I love this site, and am completely addicted to it. I was going to suggest that you guys post an FAQ file, but after reading the comments files from start to finish, I think a Frequently Questioned Facts file would be more appropriate!

Response: Thanks for the suggestion. We hope to build a FAQ, but have been too busy to do it so far.

Fri Jan 24 00:01:16 1997

So why was Valerie bathed?

Perhaps the person who shot Valerie attempted to destroy evidence, took her body to the kitchen, went out the back door and broke the window to suggest that a bullet took her down while she stood at the kitchen sink. How prominent was the evidence of blood and hair and skin on the pillow case and in bath tub drain?

Response: The window was cracked when the victim moved into the apartment. Substantial samples of hair, skin, and blood were taked from the pillow. Only trace amounts were found in the drain.

Thu Jan 23 23:51:01 1997

In the floor plan, item 4 is described as a "Broken window." My guess is, the cat wasn't begging for food, having just broken in at dinner time only to find its food source in the middle of the kitchen floor. No note is made of objects found outside the window, so my instincts tell me most of the glass fell into the sink, and, further, that the kitchen window served as an entry point.

This observation furthers a long-held theory of mine that there were two individuals involved in this murder. The first shot Valerie in her bed. The second mutilated her. I'll not presume to suggest who bathed her, nor who moved her to the kitchen.

Here's why. The person who entered through the kitchen window would have made so much noise that anyone in bed would have at least risen to the point where a fatal gunshot would not have left evidence of blood and skin on the pillow case. Instead, the person who shot Valerie likely gained entrance through the front door, and was familiar enough to Valerie to smoke purple dope and gain entrance to her bedroom.

So who came in through the kitchen window? This was no friend, no acquaintance, but rather the kind of person who must lurk on back porches because Valerie would never this person into her home. The person who entered through the kitchen window was the mutilator. Here, again, I posit a disgruntled anti-abortionist type, someone who saw Valerie as the murderer of Purity's aborted child.

That's what I see...

Response: The kitchen window was already cracked when the victim moved into the apartment. No further damage was sustained.

Thu Jan 23 23:47:29 1997

An earlier post mentions that condoms are used for drug smuggling all the time. My question was whether a lubricated condom is a good choice for this, the idea being that the lubricant would taint the goods. (Although I suppose they are only lubricated on the outside, which might just make them easier to swallow!)

Thu Jan 23 23:39:28 1997

Does anyone have any theories about the electric keyboards found near the computer? I believe past postings indicate that these are music keyboards, not computer keyboards. Weren't two keyboards at the scene? Is there any indication that the keyboards were owned by Val, or someone else? Does anyone have any idea about how these keyboards could have been used with the computer? I don't recall Val being musically inclined . . . although Purity's bio indicates musical training. (She is also similar to Will in that both apparently "excelled in math and science.")

Thu Jan 23 23:32:05 1997

In the floor plan, item 16 is described, simply, as "Overalls." Have I missed any discussions on this item, or is this the first appearance of this item? Would the overalls have fit, properly, a woman of Valerie's height and weight? Were there any distinguishing characteristics, that is to say, was the garment clean? Had it been used, perhaps, to cover the clothes worn by the murderer?

Response: The overalls are first mentioned in Joel Shenton's phone message, which was still on the victim's answering machine when she died. The overalls were found in the closet. They were fairly clean, and nothing was in the pockets. They are not considered to have any significance with regard to the murder.

Thu Jan 23 23:27:41 1997

In the floor plan, item 8 is described as "Apple Macintosh Quadra, answering machine and Keyboards." That's one computer, two keyboards. Were the two keyboards MacIntosh flavor?

Thu Jan 23 22:35:08 1997

Hey you guys, it's 1997! When I first found this site last weekend I thought that it was no longer updated and maintained because your update notices on the "view the investigation" page say January 96!

Response: Thank you. We'll fix that right away.

Thu Jan 23 20:04:11 1997

Joey told Greg that Vallerie was having an affair with William, hoping to stir up trouble between vallerie and Greg so that he could move in on her romantically.
Greg believed him and went crazy over it. He planned to kill her after having sex with her one last time. (That is why he bought the condems.
He and vallerie had concentual sex using the condem. Thus there was no sexual trauma and no sperm. then he killed her.
William arrived just in time to see Greg leaving. He went inside and found the body. He realized that his brother had committed murder.
In order to protect his brother, he washed her body in the bath tub in order to erase any trace of his brother on the body. He then dressed her in clean pajamas and disposed of the cloths that she was wearing. He moved her into the kitchen and tried to make it look like she was attacked by a sexually deranged psycho killer as a random victim.
Greg finally caught up with william and killed him.

Response: The theory you suggest is plausible, although we lack hard evidence. In this scenario, how do you account for Greg Giblini's murder?

Thu Jan 23 09:59:12 1997

How old was the victim

Response: Valerie Vilson was 26 years old.

Thu Jan 23 09:25:11 1997

I've been following this investigation from the beginning and never have I read anything about a broken window over her kitchen sink, toothpicks in the cupboard, blood etc. found in the drain, and a pair of overalls in her bedroom closet. All these items were listed in the recently provided floor plan of Valerie's apartment. Just what significance do they have to the investigation?

Response: We discussed the toothpicks in the cupboard and the overalls in the closet in response to past questions posted to this page.

The trace amounts of blood, hair, and skin found in the drain all match the victim.

According to witnesses, the kitchen window was cracked when the victim moved into the apartment March 11. It was not tampered with further.

Wed Jan 22 15:11:34 1997

Did Greg have a case of mental problems?

Was Valerie seeing someone else?

Did they break up?

How long were they together?

Response: Greg Giblini had no history of mental illness.

The victim's diary reveals many details about her relationship with Giblini. They met and began dating during the 1993-94 school year, and their relationship continued until she died.

Wed Jan 22 13:48:26 1997

where is tom giblin? how was he connected to valerie? was she working for rosebud? what was valerie's bank statement like? any recent deposits? how was she supporting herself?
and as for the condom question, condoms are used for drug smuggling all the time. the drugs are put into the condom (or balloon) packed in tight a knot tied, then the end is pulled back over and tied again. the condom is either swallowed or put into the place where the sun doesn't shine. but if there's a chance of a rectal exam, it gets swallowed. this is very common for smuggling drugs into jails ask any prisoner

Response: Thank you for the information. Tom Giblini continues to live in Santa Rosa, California. We are currently investigating possible connections between Rosebud and the Vilson and Giblini murders.

The victim's adoptive parents provided some financial support; she also worked in a drama outreach program in the local schools.

Wed Jan 22 12:07:37 1997

what about Purity's boyfriend? did he know about the abortion? does he have an alibi? was her caller id checked? who were the last calls from? what about val's adoptive parents? there's very little info on them? and in one of her faxes to purity she eludes to something in her past that is similar to Purity's situation, any ideas what that was?
I love this, it's one of my favorite sites, keep it coming.

Response: Purity Knight funded her abortion with money stolen from Jake Rohleen. When he reported the theft to her parents, they found out about the abortion and subsequently told him about it. Several friends testify to seeing Rohleen at a party in Mountain Home on the night of the murder.

The victim's caller ID logs were kept on her computer, which was destroyed. So far we have been unable to recover them.

The victim's adoptive parents have been very cooperative, but have asked that we refrain from releasing personal information for use on this site. They are not considered suspects.

The victim's faxes to Purity are cryptic. We don't know to what specifically she was referring.

Wed Jan 22 11:48:23 1997

what time did the murder occur?
What is the name of her boyfriend?
Was blood found anywhere other than on the cat?

Response: The victim died in the early morning hours of April 2. She was last seen at 1 a.m. The coroner has estimated the time of death to be 4 a.m.

Greg Giblini was the victim's boyfriend.

Trace amounts of the victim's blood, skin, and hair were found in the drain.

Tue Jan 21 18:24:37 1997

is this for real?

Response: All questions regarding the veracity of this site should be directed to [email protected], with the Subject: heading Faulkner.

Tue Jan 21 11:38:57 1997

Where was the murder?

Response: To which murder are you referring? Please be more specific.

Tue Jan 21 07:11:43 1997

You asked that I post this:

The end of a suction catheter used in medical abortions could have been the instrument used to mutilate the body of Valerie Vilson. The catheter is about 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch in diameter, and the end is sharp enough to pierce flesh, especially if the flesh had already been softened by being bathed. Either a man or woman would have the strength to make the wounds seen on the body of the victim.

Respectfully submitted--

Mon Jan 20 19:53:30 1997

Q #1: It's personal, but you're the one who posted it, so it's fair game ... What was your "other question" to the Trojan company, mentioned in their fax, to which they replied by sending you free samples? Some of your readers may wish to try a similar ploy.

Q #2: Has Ash been subsequently cleared in the minor professional ethics investigation as reported in the Oxford Eagle?

Response: #1 -- Detective Anderson apparently took the opportunity to ask for samples when he made his inquiry regarding the crime.

#2 -- Yes.

Mon Jan 20 18:35:52 1997

Detective Armstrong: My friend David is over here right
now, and he has this really cool t-shirt on ---sumthing
about police! Can you please contact me on how to send
you lots of money for one? D.A.D. P.O BOX 1016, OXFORD,

Mon Jan 20 16:37:32 1997

In a previous post from Fri Dec 6 05:36:04 1996, the person
signed off as 'JHON 15.' Now this is a reach, but when
referencing 'John 15' within the Bible Gateway http://www.gospelcom.net/bible, one gets the following quote.

1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes [*] so that it will be even more fruitful.

[*] The Greek for *prunes* also means *cleans*.

I submit this only because the message appeared in capital letters and because of the religous inference that the Knight's would so avidly support. Hmmm.

Response: The coincidence is certainly interesting, although we lack any clear proof of a connection to the case. We'll look into it.

Sun Jan 19 22:49:15 1997

I'm sorry to be cluttering this section up, but part of a message I posted didn't make it, so I am reposting it:

(p.s. Inconsistencies between Val's diary and the information exchanged on this site: a) in the comments section, one of the detectives stated that the Quadra was a Christmas present from Val's adopted parents, yet the diary indicates it was given to her by Greg. b) Comments section notes that the .38 was discovered under the couch, yet diary indicates she had no couch: *I know Ill only be here for a couple of months more but I could sure use a couch.* (3/19). Can you explain?)

Response: a) Greg apparently sold it to her at a steep discount. She funded the purchase with money from her parents.

b) The victim apparently purchased a couch between March 19 and the date of the murder and neglected to mention it in her diary. The diary is a personal interpretation of events and as such is not considered a reliable compilation of data.

Sun Jan 19 22:41:59 1997

Final question for now:

You have stated there is no evidence of Val having had sex before the murder. I am assuming that the bath the murderer gave her wouldn't have been sufficient to destroy such evidence, and also assume that all possible "avenues" of sexual contact with her body were investigated. But was there any evidence of sexual acts in the apartment at all? Maybe the condom was used there, but just not with Val. The condom problem doesn't sit right with me. I'm not convinced that it was used to store drugs because it seems that lubricated condoms are not a good choice for that particular use. Plus, the *whole carry the blood from the body, two feet over to the refrigerator in order to splatter it* thing is kind of goofy. Perhaps the condom was used to carry the blood outside of the apartment for some strange reason. All of this doesn't mean that Greg purchased them with the intention to use them any way other than the old-fashioned way. He just might not have had the chance to do so.

Response: We found no evidence in the apartment of sexual activity, aside from the package of condoms.

Sun Jan 19 22:38:59 1997

More questions:

1. What's Val's connection with the Renewal agency that the student tape advertised (and/or Greg's connection)? How was this commercial arranged? As a class project? Was it assigned to Val or chosen by her and/or a friend? Is there anyone remotely involved with this case that has a connection with this organization?

2. What exactly was the outgoing message on Val's answering machine? I'm simply curious about Joey's "tuna salad" comment, obviously a response to a joke answering machine message--but is it possible that she left a strange outgoing message that he misunderstood?

3. Any idea about the identity Greg's friend who installed the caller id? the Ted mentioned later? (3/23) Has he been interviewed? Does he know anything about the *code* Val mentions in her diary (in conversation with Will: <> 2/18 entry)

4. A detective's response to a question in the comments section says that Val was positively identified by her fingerprints. When and why was she ever fingerprinted?

5. Where is this video showing the Knight family attending an anti-abortion rally at their church?

6. Did someone else record Valerie's New Stage audition tape? I think this was brought up before, but I can't remember where I saw it. It couldn't have been Greg; according to the diary, he was out of town at the time (sent her the suspicious pride 45).

(p.s. Inconsistencies between Val's diary and the information exchanged

Sun Jan 19 22:29:21 1997

I just discovered this site this weekend. I believe Ive looked over everything at least once or twice, and am eager to join in! I have so many questions that I will break them up into several messages:

1. When was the Knight family informed of Val's death?

2. When did Purity leave for her trip?

3. Has anyone accessed the log-in records of the Rosebud tech support home page for the time period around any of the three murders?

4. (This one is going to seem REALLY stupid) Is the capitalization of the word *WILL* in Valerie's second fax to Purity a typographical error or an exact transcription of the original fax? (no image available yet--pardon this question, but with other literary allusions floating around, I can't help but think of Shakespeare's multiple uses of Will in his sonnets!)

5. Any known significance to the number 4 that shows up a few times in Vals diary (in her little poem-like sequences)?

6. The timeline shows that on 8/11/96 Joey is *re-interviewed* but I can't find another interview with him. Is one available? Did I miss this?

Sun Jan 19 15:18:57 1997

DO YOU THINK THAT THE FATHER MAY HAVE DONE THIS??? MAY'BE HE
SAW THAT VIC. AND HIS SON WHERE BREAKING UP...???
BUT...THE LOCKER TABLET THING...IT WAS INVOLVED IN BLACKMAIL RIGHT???

Response: Greg Giblini's father is physically unable to commit the crime. He is not able to lift or move anything heavy.

As for THE LOCKER TABLET THING. Could you be more specific.

Sun Jan 19 12:55:42 1997

This is so complex! Has anyone checked out William's
possible whereabouts at the time of the victim's (Valerie)
death. I know it's been a while but have anymore doors opened on this investigation ? What does Purity's ultrasound and her being pregnant tie in to her sisters murder?

Response: William Giblini's location was unknown. Credit cards in his name have been tied to the Oxford area shortly after the murder.

Purity will tell her story here the week of January 19, 1997

Sat Jan 18 21:09:38 1997

Could it be possible/plausable that Jenifer Giblini (William's wife) killed Greg after finding out that he killed William?

Response: Jennifer and William were separated. Upon his death she inherited a substantial sum. Its more likely she killed William. She has an alibi for William's murder.

Sat Jan 18 04:23:39 1997

Are you still looking for this person that killed Greg Giblini?
can we assume that he is a transient?
was the motive jealousy that linked the Vilson & older Giblini murder?
How did Greg Giblini get his brother down to Miami?
Do you have an idea were he/she is now?
what can I do to help?
who broke into Valerie Vilsons Computer? (GREG)

Response: The Greg Giblini murder case is closed. No suspect was identified by Santa Rosa police. No answers available for your other questions.

Fri Jan 17 16:19:27 1997

What is on the refrigerator besides GG picture? What is the sign I mentioned earlier and where did it come from? Where did SS logo on Auction Sheet come from? The SS is part of the Dept of Treasury and I could only find Dept of Treasury and ATF logo on their Web Page. Are you going to do this again soon, I think you've done a really good job overall!

Response: Thanks for the compliment and suggestions. The refrigerator has a stcker for a Mississippi blues festival and some strange decals from an unknown band.

The logo in question can be found in USA today. The treasury department places ads there on a regular basis.

A new investigation has begun. We will post the site in March. We may possibly prepare a preview for persons on the mail list.

Fri Jan 17 10:38:48 1997

Have you located Purity Knight? If not, what if any theories of her involvement are being considered. It seems she is a key missing element.

Response: She and her former boyfriend will appear here very soon.

Fri Jan 17 08:08:19 1997

Was anything but the diary recovered from the computer hard disk? If only the diary: why only the diary? What was Greg using the computer for? Why would anyone wipe out the disk?

If this whole thing is not a hoax, then the murders of Will and Greg could be tied to the shipment of embargoed electronics to gray markets, such as Jordan. Their murders may be unrelated to Valerie's murder.
If Valerie was murdered by religious zealots, then I would look for a medical instrument, especially one used for abortions, as the tool that was used to stab her.

Response: There were numerous applications and portions of several papers. Her thesis was unrecoverable, but was published posthumously by the University of Mississippi from her rough draft. View it at the University of Mississippi on-line catalog Requires a telnet application (Suggested setting VT100)

What sort of medical tool should be looked for?

Fri Jan 17 04:17:00 1997

I assume that the investigation into Greg's involvement with
organized crime is still being persued. Could Greg and Will
have been involved in organized crime together. Will could have been asked to "hit" Greg's girlfriend as punishment to Greg. Greg kills Will, "hit man" kills Greg? The Knights involvement and the diary could be a diverionary tactic.

Thu Jan 16 16:07:52 1997

Detective Armstrong:

In my endeavor to investigate some areas of Valerie's diary, (ie the ghost of the Ouija board) I discovered some interesting information.

[Alabama,Lousiana, Mississippi - Tour Book from AAA, pg 141]
Oxford (B-5) pop. 10,000, elev. 458'

Oxford is built on land bought in 1836 from a Chickasaw woman named Ho-kah. The town's founders chose the name Oxford in hopes og getting the state university established in town. The plan worked: The University of Missisppi, or "Ole Miss," opened its doors in 1848. When the Civil War broke out, students fought under the name "University Grays." Antebellum homes still grace the town that William Faulkner renamed Jefferson in several of his novels.

Thu Jan 16 14:18:03 1997

In the absence of additional evidence to the contrary, a strong case could be made for the following hypothesis:

For whatever reason, Greg Gilbin kills Valerie with a gunshot in Valerie's bed.

At some point, possibly while Valerie's lies asleep or dead in the bedroom, William Gilbin turns up at the house and is bitten by the cat. Greg manages to bullshit William out of the apartment.

Greg attempts to eliminate all evidence of his being in the apartment. He takes the condom filled with his semen, he washes Valerie's body, he applies a power-surge to Valerie's hard drive. Were any of Greg's fingerprints found in the apartment, especially on doorknobs? If there weren't, this would add credibility to this part of the hypothesis.

Greg knows about Valerie's troubles with the Knights. He creates a diversion by dressing Valerie and dragging her body to the kitchen where he repeatedly stabs her body in the genital area and then flicks blood onto the fridge.

William finds out about Valerie's murder. Greg talks with William, convincing William not to go to the police until Greg has talked with him.

Greg murders William outside the bathtub with the flashlight, drags him into the bathtub and fills the tub. This is consistent with Greg's remarks during the IRC. In a gesture of contempt for the police, Greg tosses the bloody flashlight, still on, into the tub.

Greg makes his living through drugs and possibly also through computer crime. Greg has a disagreement with a drug associate, possibly a supplier who hasn't been paid for some time, and is executed.

Unless the drug associate who committed the murders is found, we may never know why Greg was executed.

Is there any evidence that contradicts the above hypothesis?

Response: No. On the other hand, we lack key supporting evidence as well.

Thu Jan 16 13:45:17 1997

1. Who or what is the "other side" that Greg Gilbin is alleged to have been working for?

2. What is Vaskin Kissoyan's nationality? Do entry and exit records at US borders and airlines reveal any unusual trips?

3. The illegible bloody scrawl at Gilbin's murder site is said to have become illegible as it dried. But blood serum could have left trace minerals, etc. on the surface where it was written. How carefully was that surface analyzed? What is the pattern of the scrawl?

4. Has Rosebud been searched and its financial records and other assets analyzed for unusual connections?

Thu Jan 16 13:27:59 1997

Look into the murder/thriller play Will was in. Are there any similarities in events or actions? Could the murder have been acted out from a script?

Response: Not as far as we can tell.

Thu Jan 16 13:26:03 1997

It appears that the condom was opened by a right hander, but the stabbing and splattering of blood appears to be the work of a left hander. What do you think about that?

Response: We could draw no such conclusions. What factors determine your hypothesis?

Thu Jan 16 13:24:00 1997

what ever happened with ZAKRZEWSKI?

Thu Jan 16 13:23:18 1997

What do the phone records of Val, Will, greg, and Joel on the days surrounding the murder reveal? What about the records of will's phone in his hotel room in miami? or greg's records in his Cal. apartment?

Response: We're currently investigating along these lines. Results so far remain classified.

Thu Jan 16 13:20:31 1997

Any further info on the utility records that show the electrical spike that supposedly erased Val's Harddrive?

Thu Jan 16 10:50:55 1997

The diary (victim's) seems contrived. I am a professional editor and writer as well as mystery buff, so feel I can comment on this. The episode of the victim with the ouija board, the dreams and the "man with the red umbrella" and Greg's asking "do you believe in angels" are strange, as is the card saying "umbrellas up." These are not the normal types of scientific evidence that turn up. The whole thing feels more a very clever piece of fiction, complete with faked photos and links to real internet sites to establish credibility. "Will" Giblini's involvement is unclear; what was his computer fraud crime?

Response: The coincidences in the victim's diary are strange, yet they exist. The victim may have fictionalized some occurances. The dreams may have been her own subconscious attempts to make sense of chaos. As this case progresses, we agree more and more that there are more things in heaven and earth etc. etc.
As to your questions regarding the veracity of this site, please direct all such enquiries to [email protected], with the Subject: heading Faulkner.
As to computer fraud, we're currently investigating possible connections with Rosebud in California. We hope to obtain permission to release further information soon.

Wed Jan 15 18:25:42 1997

I've read some of the comments to your case, but not all of them, so forgive me if someone has already asked this:Don't you think the sign on the refrigerator door "I gottem Sept 18 (maybe 13 or 15), 1996" gives away the ruse since Valerie was murdered in 1995?

Response: No ruse here. This web site went online with general crime information on January 15, 1995. The Vilson case went online in April of 1995. The comments archives go back to July 1995.

Wed Jan 15 16:58:27 1997

Was it checked wheather or not victim's friend is getting N.Y.Times delivered or was there any sticker with the adress on the paper ?

Response: No sticker. It was hand delivered.

Wed Jan 15 09:21:38 1997

How old was she?

Response: The victim, Valerie Vilson was 26. This appears in her biography.

Tue Jan 14 14:36:21 1997

Regarding your response on Fri Jan 10 about Purity's abortion. In some clinics it is normal practice to give an ultrasound in order to determine how far along the woman is. It is very difficult to do that with the normal urine and blood tests. Also you must be at least 7 weeks pregnant in order to have certian types of abortions.

Tue Jan 14 11:17:47 1997

Finally, someone who agrees that the shooter and the mutilator are two different people (see DNA guy's comments). Perhaps looking at the two events as actions of different individuals will provide some breakthrough in the investigation.

Response: There are those in this office who also agree with you. You are not alone.

Tue Jan 14 01:38:39 1997

Detective Armstrong:

Considering the age difference between Greg Giblini and his
brother William, 16 years give or take, I find it highly
unlikely that the two would share in a lemonade stand.

Also, can you clarify the date at which Frank and Judith
Knight met? I suspect it is prior to Frank's graduation,
which should place Valerie's conception around 1968-69.

Michael

Response: They met at Washington University between. They were students there from 1967-71.

Mon Jan 13 21:32:50 1997

one other thing to support the idea that two different people committed the shooting and the mutilation. Why, after going through so much trouble to clean the body, would the killer then grotesquely mutilate the body and sling blood all over the kitchen? These two acts are inconsistant. And why only bathe the body? why not clean up all the other evidence (drugs, condoms)? Was the killer in a hurry? did he have to leave? I need more evidence. What can you give me?

Response: The killer was too methodical to be hurried. The body lay undiscovered for several hours. The cruelty the killer inflicted has always been viewed as a psychopathic act. That may have a been a diversionary tactic.

Mon Jan 13 21:18:05 1997

Blood was found near the cat's mouth, correct. Is this evidence that the cat caused an injury to Will that caused bleeding (ie. a scratch or a bite)? Were there any marks or scars on Will's body that resemble such injuries? If Will was bleeding enough to leave blood on the cat, then shouldn't their be some of his blood in the apartment. Unless of course that was washed with the body after the gunshot. This makes sense if Will pulled the trigger on Val.

Response: No scarring and no other traces of William Giblini in the apartment.

Mon Jan 13 21:05:30 1997

DNA ... And what about that gunshot? Did no one hear a gunshot at 6 am? You mentioned that the neighbors discovered the body when they heard strange noises from the cat. If they were able to hear noises from a cat certainly they could have heard the firing of a 22 cal. pistol.

Response: The bedroom was on the far side of the apartment. The building is a concrete art deco 4-plex. The cat was howling in the kitchen near a window.

Mon Jan 13 21:01:42 1997

DNA guy again...I don't think that the same person who shot the gun into Val's head is the same person who stabed her body. If she was shot at 6 am why would the killer wait around for another hour (the coroner stated that the stabbing at approximately 7 am) just to make some dark statement? If I were the killer and had just shot someone in the quiet hours of the morning, I think I would want to get the hell out of Dodge! I wouldn't wait around.

Mon Jan 13 20:53:44 1997

Some small brushes do have fairly sharp ends (such as size 2 in Windsor Newton brushes; I'm an artist and I have been poked by brushes enough to know that they can punture with enough force.) A bloody brush could also duplicate the splatter marks on the fridge.

Response: Very interesting. I've sent an officer to find the brushes you mention.

Mon Jan 13 19:20:48 1997

it's the tornado/DNA guy again...What about Tom's letter? Surely his conversations with his pen pal are not that private, unless something is being hidden. Have you interviewed him about this? And can prozac have any strange reactions to the alcohol and drugs? for such a big purse there was not much inside (just a thought)

Response: Yes, Prozac can react to alcohol in unpredictable ways. It is counter indicated.

The letter is from a now 13 year old pen pal. He was a student of Ms. Vilson's. His family spent a year sabbatical there. We'd all rather not involve him. In the letter he mentions lack of comic books and he thanks Ash for an earlier letter.

Mon Jan 13 17:02:17 1997

Will you tell me who did it .....

Response: That's an interesting idea...

Mon Jan 13 15:29:56 1997

Apparently, there is some kind of lamp visible at the
Will Giblini crime scene. Any lead connected to this?

Any news on the unidentified finger print on Greg Giblinis
computer keyboard. This might give a cross-link to what
happened to Valeries computer ?!

Anything of interest on G. Giblinis hard drive or disks?

Response: 1-Lamp? Are you speaking of the refelection in the bathtub?
2-Not yet, but the Fingerprint database grows daily. As for crosslink. That seems more likely than ever.
3-Only programs, seemly bundled with the computer. There were no data files on the hard drive. The few disks there were blank. Our computer experts found a driver for a ZIP type disk drive--but no drive or disks.

Sat Jan 11 23:00:29 1997

I wrote earlier about the DNA possibly belonging to William.
If the blood found on the cat is his, could this mean that both brothers were there that night and possibly fought. This may have been what drove Greg to alledgedly kill William.

Response: Your theory is plausible. We lack hard evidence.

Sat Jan 11 21:47:38 1997

How did the blood get onto the door of Ms. Vilson's Fridge?

What is the current location to Purity Knight?

Response: We currently believe that the killer splattered or flicked blood onto the refrigerator.

Ms. Knight's exact whereabouts are unknown. University of Mississippi officials have confirmed that she registered for classes for the current semester, but has not yet arrived on campus.

Sat Jan 11 20:46:33 1997

I think we should check out this Joey and see what he knows. We should find out where her boyfriend lives.

Response: Joel Shenton was interviewed once and provided an alibi, which has been confirmed. As to the victim's boyfriend, Greg Giblini was found dead in his California apartment in March of 1996.

Sat Jan 11 15:20:58 1997

You mentioned that some products of Rosebud had the tornado insignia. Concider the following:
DNA did not match except for gender (male) and one other mysterious match. Could this mean that the murderer is related to Greg, i.e. william? If William was somehow involved with Val and Greg, he could have been there on the night of the murder. After Greg and Val had sex and Greg left, William could have come in and killed Val. This might explain the close DNA and the blood spattered intentionally on the fridge near the pic of Greg. After hearing of what his brother did Greg may have sought to "lasso the tornado" and killed William. But this does not explain Greg's death.
Could Greg's death have been suicide?

Response: Your theory is interesting. Consider the following:
1. Recent test results confirm that the blood found on the cat belonged to William Giblini.
2. The photograph on the refrigerator is of Will, not Greg.
3. The angle of entry of the gunshot wound that caused Greg Giblini's death rules out suicide. He was shot from behind.

Sat Jan 11 15:05:25 1997

1. what could have made the puncture wounds on Valreie's body?
possible: awl, screwdriver, toothpick, paintbrushes (like the kind used in theatre make-up), fencing rapier (joel),cross.

Response: Toothpicks are unlikely.
Most paintbrushes are too blunt -- do you have a specific brand in mind?
To prevent injuries to fencers, competition-style rapiers have rounded rubber tips rather than pointed ends.
I like the connections you've made here. What else do you see?

Sat Jan 11 14:20:50 1997

Do you think that the "tornado" in Greg's letter could refer to his brother, William?

Response: Giblini speaks with so much imagery it is difficult to say. There are some products manufactured by Rosebud Electronics that bear the Tornado insignia.

Sat Jan 11 13:25:20 1997

If the killer is alleged to have brought the 1/4 inch diameter weapon with him and not taken it from the apartment then are we to assume this murder was premeditated?

Response: He brought the weapon with him and took it away after the crime. Very likely premeditated acts.

Fri Jan 10 21:37:54 1997

Two interesting anagrams for "Laine Watkins"
1) Lisa Tina Knew
2) A slain wet kin.

Response: The L.W. initials are the same as Lisa Wood. I don't think it means anything.

Fri Jan 10 21:35:54 1997

Why would Purity Knight have an ultrasound done if she was going to have an abortion?

How far into her pregnancy was she when she had the ultrasound? At what week did she terminate her pregancy.

Also, where did she get the money for the ultrasound? It is an expensive procedure, in the $1000 range. She wouldn't have used her parent's health insurance because she would run the risk of having them find out.

Response: 1-We don't know why she had the ultrasound.
2-The ultrasound is at 7 weeks development. The abortion was performed less than two weeks later.
3-It was not paid for by insurance. The clinic records show a cash transaction.

Fri Jan 10 18:08:14 1997

Who is the read-headed man?

Response: Greg Gibin, the victim's boyfriend, had red hair.

Fri Jan 10 18:06:18 1997

Did she have an affair?

Response: No clear indication of that. The diary raises some doubts.

Fri Jan 10 16:47:38 1997

I'm curious; if the computer's hard drive was "destroyed", how did they manage to START it up and find out it was destroyed????

Response: The hard drive was destroyed and could not start up the computer. The hard drive platters were fused together. Reconstruction of the data required mechanical and digital resurrection.

Fri Jan 10 16:31:52 1997

DO YOU THINK IT'S AT ALL POSSIBLE THAT LISA WOOD WAS RUNNING WITH EITHER GIBLIN?

Response: Possible, but no one ever saw them together.

Fri Jan 10 16:11:40 1997

When will the coroner's report on Greg Giblini's murder be released here?

Response: Our staff is compiling documents from the California investigation at this very moment. The touchy feely courts in California won't let us publish the actual documents. We are creating facsimiles, abstracts and transcripts. Look for the first items on the 12th of January.

Thu Jan 9 21:31:27 1997

Did I miss something? What was updated January 6th? There is no new information. I am still not getting any updates by e-mail either, did you check out your system?

Response: The January 6th update was an update in the appearance of the site. Some of it requires a Java capable browser. It's coded so non-Java users won't notice the difference.

As for your subscription the mail list. I have a feeling that there was a problem with your request. Try the new form. If your request is successful, you'll get an immediate e-mail response. Sorry for the inconvenience

If you take another look at the items taken in the Knight search, you'll see a hesitantly added item.

Thu Jan 9 15:11:07 1997

Was the victim involved in any kind of drug\gang activity?

Response: There was indication of casual drug use. No gang activity.

Thu Jan 9 07:38:05 1997

Who is Laine Watkins (the name on the airline ticket), and how does this person relate to the crime?

Response: It is related to a credit card used in Oxford, Miami and Santa Rosa--in connection with the Valerie Vilson murder and the Giblini killings. I've said too much.

Thu Jan 9 04:56:23 1997

Dear Armstrong

did you talk to someone about the visions Ms Vilson was seeing

Response: Do you mean her dreams? No, they haven't been interpreted. What do you suggest they might indicate?

Wed Jan 8 12:04:45 1997

Has Vaskin Kisoyan been investigated?

Response: Mr. Kissoyan is no longer in the country. We await news of his whereabouts.

Wed Jan 8 12:01:49 1997

Has Jake been questioned? Where was he the night of Valerie's murder? He might have had it out for Valerie for taking part in Purity obtaining an abortion. This would explain the lower abdominal mutilation. Also, I thought I read he was religious, too. This would possibly support the ritual theory that others have suggested. Finally, he has already shown a violent side with the act of raping Purity, a woman he was supposed to love and care for.

Response: Several friends, interviewed separately, said they saw Jake Rohleen at a party on the night of the murder.

Wed Jan 8 10:20:24 1997

On the Bio. page of the Knight family, it says that the parents only had one daughter, Purity Knight. On Purity Knight's bio. it says her sister, Valerie Vilson was murdered in 1995. How are they sisters if the Knight's only had 1 daughter?

Response: The victim was Purity's sister, but had been given up for adoption long before Purity was born. Although the victim was reunited with her birth parents shortly before her death, they were not close, which might explain why Judith did not list the victim as a daughter. By contrast, Purity Knight maintained close relations with the victim. Purity's biographical information attests to the fact that she accepted the victim as her sister.

The victim's diary provides more insight into the relationship with her birth family.

Tue Jan 7 17:20:53 1997

WHERE IS BRIANA AND WHO IS ROOTH?

Response: Briana was Valerie Vilson's Roommate. Vilson moved out shortly before her death. Briana has graduated and her location is not known.

Rooth is a professor at the University. She was a friend.

Mon Jan 6 22:06:10 1997

In my endeavor to compile a list of the people mentioned in this site (everyone is a suspect), I have noticed two inconsistant names:

1) Judith Knight
Was born as Judith Ann Veeder
Valerie mentions receiving a letter from Judith Felton

2) Joel Shenton
Mentioned as Joe Conner in Question History

Okay, so is this a clue or is there really a mistake?

Response: 1-Mrs. Knight used an alias.
2-Connor is a typo. Was that in the 1995 comments?

Nice work. I'd like to harness that energy. If you put together an index or a useful document, let me know. Perhaps we can put in online.

Mon Jan 6 21:09:26 1997

I THINK BOTH MS.WOOD AND PURITY NEED TO BE PURSUED MORE I BELIEVE THEY BOTH KNOW SOMETHING AND ARE HIDING SOMETHING. HOW ABOUT LIE DETECTOR TESTING ON BOTH.

Response: The US constitution prevents from using a lie detector test as an investigative tool.

Purity Knight is registered for classes at the University of Mississippi. We expect her to come the by station for an interview.

Mon Jan 6 17:49:47 1997

I would like to know if she got shot in the head, where is the blood? The blood sprayed from the torso wound, is lying in a puddle, beside the victim, and (supposedly) sprayed on the fridge, and the wall, ect. There isn't any blood beside the victim's head, unless her hair used to be blonde. I don't think this information can help much but it's worth a try.

-Jade

Response: The victim was shot while in her bed. The small caliber bullet left only a small entry wound. She bleed internally.

The blood on the kitchen floor drained from the abdomen and pooled.

The refrigerator splattering was an intentional act. We expect the killer flicked her blood upon it. The bloody refrigerator was visible thru the kitchen window.

Mon Jan 6 16:44:04 1997

I stumbled across this page by accident. Is this story for real? Great work on the assembly of the page and format. I live in Olive Branch MS.

My wife and I read this page for several hours!
I wish we could help

Why don't more departments use this sort of coverage to get help on cases?

Response: Thanks for the kind words. When we went online 2 years ago, there was nothing like it anywhere. Now, things are changing. We expect others to follow our lead.

For information regarding the reality of this site. Send e-mail to [email protected] Use the subject heading Faulkner.

Mon Jan 6 13:38:53 1997

Were there any knitting needles in her apartment?

Response: No. There was no sign of the stabbing weapon or any indications that one had been removed from the aartment. The killer likely brought it with him, and removed it when he was through.

Sun Jan 5 17:09:21 1997

Who created "Yoknapatawpha County" ?

Response: God made Mississippi, we suppose he had a hand in Yoknpatawpha county.

Sat Jan 4 13:14:09 1997

COULD THE OBJECT USED TO STAB VALERIE BE AN AWL?

Response: Possible.

Sat Jan 4 12:57:26 1997

IT REALLY HIT HOME AFTER SEEING VALERIE DOING SOMETHING SHE LOVED, NOT JUST A BODY ON THE FLOOR. WHAT A SHAME.

Sat Jan 4 04:22:27 1997

Did the matches in her purse look fresh like she'd been there recently?
Can you tell be how tall she is and the entrance of the bullet wound, the approximate height of the shooter?

Response: 1-The matches were partially used. Probably fresh.
2-The shooting occured while the victim lay in bed.

Fri Jan 3 17:39:06 1997

What time was the murder?

Response: In the early morning. She was last seen at 1AM. The coroner put thetime of death at 4AM.

Thu Jan 2 16:10:33 1997

1. The attack on the stomach area may have been an attempt to kill an unborn child, check the opened condom rapper for small puncture hole.
2. How did the blood get on the cat. Was this Single Locus probe testing, or multi locus probe testing. Contact Cellmark Diagnostics in Germantown Maryland for further info on these types of tests.
3. Where the puncture wounds smooth. this could have been from a pointed christian cross. Was the suspect religous.
4. Check the higher memory on the computer to see when the drive was cleared. Why would he want the drive wiped clean, except for any letters that might have been typed.
5. Why leave the body in the kitchen, and why did the suspect clean the body so well.
In conclusion my theory:
The victum had sex with the suspect, the suspect used a condom but the condom broke while having sex, the victum passed out from the use of drugs. The suspect started thinking about whether or not he came inside the victum and started to panic. The suspect shot the victum in the back of the head and than proceeded to wash the victum to remove any evidence. The suspect removed as much evidence as possible, and thought with the little blood loss that the victum might not be dead, and the baby may survive, at this time the suspect attacks the victum with a smooth steel object(cross) and stabbs the victum around her belly.

This was a truely brutal crime, I hope you can catch this individual and bring justice to the victums family. If any of this helps please let me know, my email address is below.

Thu Jan 2 14:09:58 1997

Did she have enemy?

Response: The victim's diary suggests that a number of people may have been considered "enemies"; however, investigations based on the diary have so far failed to result in concrete leads.
